Wooden Mortised Fence Posts
Our Wooden Mortised Fence Posts come in a full range of sizes to suit most fencing projects. Our Wooden Morticed Intermediate Fence Posts will look great in any garden. Having been pre mortised it makes it easy to attach your rails and counter and capping rail and make a solid good looking and robust Close Board Fence to the exact specifications you need.
All our mortised posts are pressure treated with the latest generation of treatment chemicals. The posts have mortice holes cut through the face to allow a scarf rail to pass through the hole for additional strength. All our timber fence posts are pressure treated to prevent insect attack and fungal decay.
All our posts are bought from carefully selected sawmills around the UK – we only buy FSC® Certified (FSC® C007915) timber from approved sawmills. Every step from the sustainable forest to your garden has to meet strict rules that are audited by independent inspectors.
You should ensure you add a prick post to support the rails in the middle of each bay.
As with all natural materials, our Timber supply may be subject to movement and deterioration as they season, this is not to considered to be a fault or defect. This may become evident with shakes, splits and warping.

Wooden Mortised Fence Post FAQ's
What are Wooden Mortised Fence Posts?
Mortised wooden fence posts are an integral and key structural support, set into the ground at regular intervals to reinforce fence panels and to hold them in place.
If the wooden fence posts are too weak, the fence may collapse under pressure or in strong winds.
For most privacy and general-purpose fences, 6 or 8 feet between posts is standard. There are 2 types of fence posts you can buy, concrete or wood.
Post and rail is a generic term used to describe a fencing system that uses a solid timber post with horizontal rails fastened between the posts.
Sturdy post and rail fencing is a very simple, effective and easily installed style of open fencing
Where are Wooden Mortised Fence Posts Used?
Post and rail fencing can be used to provide demarcation of smaller areas of land or gardens, or protection for features such as flowerbeds or young trees, while still allowing open views.
Post and rail fencing is a fence style that uses perpendicular posts driven into the ground with two or more horizontal rails attached between the posts.
Post and rail fencing is constructed either with morticed fence posts with fence rails simply slotted into the mortices, or with solid fence posts with fence rails nailed onto the posts.
This method of fence construction makes it ideal for a run of fencing where the ground is sloping or uneven. As the posts are all inserted at the same height from the ground, the rails can follow the slope of the land between each set of posts.
The backbone of any fence in your garden, our pressure treated wooden mortised fence posts are strong and durable.
Whether you’re looking for sawn, planed, square, round, pointed, or grooved posts, we have it in stock and offer either green or brown water-based treatments.
Wooden Mortised Fence Post Sizes
Wooden mortised fence posts generally need to be 6-8 inches in diameter, 8 feet long and set a minimum of 3-1/2 feet deep for a 6ft high fence.
Wooden Mortised Fence Post Spacing
Most wooden mortised fence posts can be spaced 8 to 12 feet apart. While this is a general criteria, it doesn’t cover all scenarios.
For instance, high tensile fence can have larger spacing, requiring line posts every 15 to 20 feet for field fence styles, and as much as 20-30 feet for high tensile barbed and smooth wire.
Wooden Mortised Fence Post Installation
Due to the sheer weight of either concrete or wood fence posts, installation takes a great deal of time and effort. This usually requires an extra pair of hands or two to ensure a safe and efficient job is complete.
Wooden Mortised Fence Post Treatment
Simply setting the posts in concrete does create a condition that will accelerate rot in the bottom of the posts. With pressure-treated posts, the rot will be slow.
When it comes to rot prevention, you should treat the post above ground and the wood post below ground. The bottom of the post is most susceptible to rot, as it’s in constant contact with moisture from the ground.
