MOT Type 1 is a crushed aggregate made from hard stone, commonly limestone, that is graded so it contains a mixture of larger stones, smaller pieces and fines.

MOT Type 1 graded limestone is mostly used as a sub base in a variety of applications including driveways, pathways, garden structures and landscaping.

To understand the depth of sub base required, you must first determine how the area is going to be used. The heavier the load, the deeper the sub base should be, typically around 200 – 300mm for an area with heavy vehicles such as lorries, and around 150 – 200mm in depth for domestic driveways.

A bulk bag of Type 1 MOT limestone will typically cover 0.7 – 0.8m ³. The depth will make a big difference in area coverage, for example at 50mm depth you can expect a coverage area of roughly 15m ².

Yes. MOT Type 1 should be compacted if you’re using it as a sub-base. Compaction is what makes the individual pieces lock together and creates the stable foundation you want. Compact your Type 1 limestone by firstly clearing and levelling the designated area.

Next, lay the aggregate in layers, rather than applying all of the material in one attempt. Aim to lay around 50-75mm per layer before compacting.

Finally, use a vibrating compactor to fully compact and stabilise your MOT Type 1 limestone.

Dove Grey limestone gravel is a decorative landscaping aggregate. Dove Grey limestone is a good choice when you want a relatively light, neutral grey finish rather than the darker colours of slate.

Using limestone chippings within planting areas is generally not advised. Over a prolonged period of time, the limestone can raise the soil pH, altering the nutritional value of the soil.

Choosing between limestone or granite chippings will depend on the intended application. For planting areas, granite would be the best option due to the alkaline changes in the soil that limestone can cause.

Both limestone and granite chippings can be used on driveways, paths, or for decorative purposes. The choice will come down to personal preference.
