Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest paving slab?
Our cheapest paving is the Kandla Grey Value sandstone mixed-size pack, at around £23 per square metre including VAT. It is the same Indian sandstone as our standard Kandla Grey but calibrated to 18mm rather than 22mm, which is still plenty for a patio or path. Kota Black limestone mixed packs follow at around £24 per square metre, and porcelain starts at around £32. Across the range, the cheapest slab is always a mixed-size natural stone pack rather than a single-size slab, because the mixed packs use the quarry’s output more efficiently. The price you see is for the slabs only; delivery is charged by the pallet on top.
What affects the price of paving slabs?
Material is the biggest factor, then thickness, then how the slab is cut and packed. Natural sandstone and limestone cost less than porcelain and slate because they are quarried and split rather than manufactured or hand-finished. A thinner 18mm calibrated slab costs less than a 22mm one, and a mixed-size pack costs less per square metre than single-size 90×60 or 60×60 slabs of the same stone. Finish matters too: hand-dressed riven edges are cheaper than sawn, smooth edges. Finally, delivery is charged by the number of pallets and your postcode, so a 7m² pack and a 22m² pack can cost the same to deliver, which makes larger orders cheaper per metre overall.
How much extra paving should I order to allow for cuts and wastage?
Order 10% more than the area you measure, and 15% for a diagonal pattern, a circle, or a patio with lots of curves and corners. Natural stone is a fragile load, and the industry allows for a 5 to 10% breakage rate in transit; our own terms set a 10% tolerance before an order qualifies for a return, and minor damage under £100 is not replaced. The extra also covers cuts at the edges and the odd slab with a mark you would rather not use. Mixed-size packs come in fixed sizes such as 7m², 12m², 17m² and 22m², so round up to the next pack rather than down, and keep a few spare slabs for repairs.
Is paving delivered on pallets?
Yes. All our paving is delivered on pallets, and the delivery charge is worked out from the number of pallets your order needs and your postcode, which you will see in the basket before you pay. Pallets arrive on a lorry that can be up to 18 tonnes, fitted with a tail-lift and a manual pump truck, usually within 7 working days of ordering. Deliveries run between 8am and 6.30pm, and if you give us a mobile number the courier will text when the load leaves the depot and again with a two-hour arrival window. Someone needs to be there to sign for it. Full details are on our paving delivery information page.
Can the pallet be placed on my driveway rather than at the kerb?
Yes, if the lorry can get to your driveway and the surface is hard and level. The courier guarantees a kerbside drop or the nearest hard surface the pump truck can reach, and will put the pallet on your drive with your permission where access allows. A pump truck cannot cross gravel, grass, soft ground, steps or a raised kerb, so on those surfaces the pallet stays at the kerb and you move the slabs by hand. Tell us about narrow roads, low branches, parked cars or a steep drive before you order, because a failed delivery caused by access problems is re-charged, and the slabs cannot be left on the public highway.
Can I get a sample before ordering a full pack?
We do not sell sample pieces, but for most single-size ranges you can order one slab, which is the practical way to see the colour and texture at home before committing to a full pack. A single 90×60 porcelain slab, for example, costs around £17 including VAT plus delivery. Mixed-size natural stone packs are only sold as complete packs, with 7m² the smallest. Bear in mind that natural stone varies from slab to slab by design, so one piece shows you the type of colour rather than the exact shade of every slab, and the product pages describe the range of tones in each pack.
Can you supply PAV2 concrete for a paving base?
Yes, through our concrete team rather than the online shop, which lists the general-purpose Gen, ST, RC and FND mixes. PAV2 is a designated paving concrete with air entrained into the mix so it resists frost and de-icing salt, and it is specified where the concrete itself is the driving surface or a heavily used hardstanding. For a base under paving slabs you usually do not need it: a compacted Type 1 sub-base with a full mortar bed is the standard build for a patio, and where a concrete slab is wanted under a driveway, a Gen 1 or ST2 base does the job because the paving on top takes the weather. Our Mini Mix service delivers from 1m³, so ask for PAV1 or PAV2 by name if your design calls for it.
