HardieBacker FAQ's
What are Backer Boards Used For?
In the simplest of terms, backer boards are prefabricated sheets (commonly constructed from cement-based materials) that are attached to walls and floors to form a sturdy base onto which tiles can be laid.
Wall and Floor Preparation
A Concrete Backer board can cover up an uneven wall and floor with ease. We recommend HardieBacker Boards as they are mould and moisture resistant, easy to work with yet remain sturdy in their lifespan.
The Backer provides a flat even surface that can be screwed into the wall or floor and covers over any uneven problem areas.
Backer Board Installation
It is wise to attach Backer Board to strong support areas as the concrete boards and tiles weigh a lot and you run the risk of them adding stress to the walls. But they are easy to install and create an instant flat surface for use on walls and floors.
Why Use Backer Boards?
Traditionally you would have used either plasterboard or plywood as your substrate when tiling wet areas in your home.
But in recent years these have been replaced by cement-based backer boards. They have proven to be the perfect base on which to tile in your bathroom or kitchen thanks to their waterproof qualities and the fact that they don’t need to be treated before tiling your floor or wall.
