Decking Joists

We carefully select our decking joists, rails and supports to ensure they offer the stability you need when enhancing an outdoor space.

All our timber decking joists are pressure treated to ensure the maximum lifespan possible. Timber that is in ground contact will rot in a few years if not pressure treated correctly.

We stock pressure treated, sturdy 47 x 100mm (2″ x 4″) and 47 x 150mm (2″ x 6″) joists.

Keep the spacings between your joists to no more than 450mm (18 inches) – or your decking boards may “bounce” when you walk on them. Do not forget to include the “noggins” – the cross members designed to keep your deck stable and secure. If your joists are 450mm apart – try to put a noggin every 1500mm (5 feet).

As with all natural materials, our Timber supply may be subject to movement and deterioration as they season, this is not to considered to be a fault or defect. This may become evident with shakes, splits and warping.

Decking Joists FAQ's

Decking Joists FAQ's

What are Decking Joists?

A decking joist is a repeated board used as the structural base for your deck frame that is attached to the ledger via galvanized joist hangers.

Typically, joists run perpendicular to the house, while the decking on top runs parallel to the house. Every significant portion of your deck needs to be supported by a joist.

Most decks use 16″ on centre spacing for joists. The majority of decking is not strong enough to support longer spans than 16″.

It’s important to ensure that deck joists are installed securely and evenly across the area, to allow for a safe and level decking to be laid on top.

Where are Decking Joists Used?

Having decking joists installed will help create a decked focal point in your garden that is suitable for a variety of outdoor activities. Decking is considered to be a safe place for children to play, and the perfect spot for you to simply relax on a deckchair and feel close to nature.

Every portion of your decking needs to be supported by a joist, otherwise you risk it being not structurally sound and could bend or buckle over time.

When it comes to frame decking for your garden, especially the joists, pressure-treated lumbers are among the most widely used.

Why Have Decking Joists?

Deck joists give you the framework to attach your timber decking boards to and play a very important part in ascertaining the strength and durability of your decking.

If this part of the decking is skipped, you stand to compromise the service life, regardless of the quality of the deck boards.

Decking Joist Lifespan

Whether for framing only or the decking too, pressure treated lumber lasts a long time.

Pressure treated lumber exposed to freeze-thaw and wet-dry cycles without care or maintenance will last about 9-years. With proper maintenance and treatment, the same deck will last 40 plus years.

Decking Joist Installation

Remove any grass or weeds from the site and dig down to a minimum depth of 210mm below the top height if you need to.

150mm for the deck joists, 38mm for the boards and 10mm so that the joists don’t sit directly onto the soil. The site should be as level as possible after you have dug out.
