Frequently Asked Questions
What Materials Can Go in an Asbestos Skip?
Asbestos containing materials refers to any material that contains more than 1% Asbestos. It had a very wide range of applications, and some of the most common Asbestos uses included Asbestos blankets, car brakes, floor tiles, garage roofs, mattress filling, plaster and much more. Although the use of Asbestos has now been outlawed, many ACMs still exist today and could potentially pose a health risk.
What happens if I put asbestos in a normal skip?
Putting asbestos in a normal skip is illegal because asbestos is hazardous waste and must be kept separate from other rubbish. If it is found, the skip can be reused for collection, and the whole load may have to be treated as asbestos waste, at a much higher cost. Loose asbestos in an open skip can also release fibres that put drivers, site workers and neighbours at risk. Asbestos must go in a sealed, lockable enclosed asbestos skip or a dedicated asbestos bag.
Can I dispose of asbestos myself?
Yes, but only lower-risk asbestos, and only through an approved route. Homeowners can remove small amounts of bonded asbestos, such as cement sheets from a garage roof, as long as they avoid breaking it and double wrap it. It cannot go in a household bin or a general skip. Take it to a council recycling centre that accepts asbestos, or have it collected by a licensed carrier. Higher-risk materials such as asbestos insulation board, pipe lagging and sprayed coatings must be removed by a HSE-licensed contractor, such as the Mick George asbestos removal team.Â
How much does an asbestos skip cost?
A Mick George 8 yard enclosed asbestos skip costs from £941 + VAT including up to 2 tonnes of asbestos waste. It has a lockable lid, so the waste stays sealed on site until collection. The final price depends on the weight of waste (charges apply above two tonnes), the collection address and the container size. Larger enclosed skips and roll on roll off containers up to 40 yards are priced on request by calling 0800 587 3329.Â
How much does it cost to get rid of a small amount of asbestos?
For small amounts, a Mick George asbestos bag costs £345.83 + VAT, including collection and licensed disposal. The bag measures 250cm x 150cm x 30cm, so it fits a few cement roof sheets or a small quantity of floor tiles without breaking them. Some council recycling centres accept small amounts of wrapped household asbestos for free or for a small fee, usually by appointment. Check with your council first as rules and limits vary.
What types of asbestos can I put in an asbestos skip?
Mick George enclosed asbestos skips take both bonded and fibrous asbestos waste. Bonded asbestos includes cement roof sheets, soffits, flue pipes, textured coatings and floor tiles. Fibrous or higher-risk asbestos, such as insulation board and pipe lagging can also go in but it must be removed and wrapped by an HSE-licensed contractor first. Soil contaminated with asbestos needs a separate assessment through the asbestos in soils service. For help identifying a material, see our types of asbestos materials guide.Â
How does asbestos need to be wrapped or bagged before it goes in the skip?
Asbestos must be double-wrapped or double-bagged in heavy-duty polythene, sealed with tape and labelled as asbestos before it goes in the skip. Put small pieces and floor tiles into an asbestos waste bag, then place that bag inside a second one. Wrap large sheets whole in two layers of heavy polythene rather than breaking them to fit. Lightly dampening the material first reduces dust. Keep the skip lid locked between loads.Â
What paperwork do I need to dispose of asbestos waste?
Every movement of asbestos waste needs a hazardous waste consignment note in England and Wales, including asbestos from a home. Homeowners don’t have to fill it in, the contractor or waste carrier completes it. Businesses must complete the note as the waste producer and keep a copy for three years. Mick George supplies fully compliant paperwork with every asbestos collection, so the record of disposal is complete.Â
Is it illegal to bury asbestos in my garden?
Yes. Burying asbestos is illegal, because it counts as depositing hazardous waste without an environmental permit under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. The penalties include unlimited fines and prison sentences. Buried asbestos also contaminates the soil and can resurface when the ground is dug, which can cause problems when you sell the property. If asbestos has already been buried or mixed into the soil, the Mick George asbestos in soils team can test the ground and remove it safely.Â
