Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose between a skip, a skip bag, a grab lorry and man & van waste collection?
Choose by how much waste you have, what it is and whether you have space. A skip suits most building, garden and clearance jobs where you can load over several days and have a drive or a permit for the road. A skip bag is for a cubic metre or so of waste where a skip would not fit or is more than you need. A grab lorry is the quickest way to remove large piles of soil, rubble or hardcore from a reachable spot. Man and van is for when you want the waste loaded for you and gone the same day.
What's the cheapest way to get rid of rubbish?
For a few bags, the cheapest route is your council tip, which is free for householders, and giving reusable items to charity or a free-collection site. Beyond that, the cheapest paid option depends on volume: a general waste skip bag costs from £61.25 ex VAT plus £34.00 for collection, a wait and load skip from £160.00, and a full skip works out cheapest per cubic metre once you have more than a car load. Sorting waste by type lowers the price further, because a dedicated garden, wood or hardcore skip costs less than a mixed one. Businesses cannot use council tips and must pay a licensed carrier.
How do I get rid of a lot of rubbish?
Order a large skip, a roll-on roll-off container or a grab lorry, depending on the material. An 8 yard skip takes roughly 80 bin bags and suits most house clearances and renovations; for site clearances and shopfits, roll-on roll-off containers run from 20 to 40 yards. Loose heavy material such as soil, rubble and hardcore is quickest removed by a grab lorry, which lifts up to 16 tonnes in one visit without you loading anything. If it is mixed junk inside a property, a man and van team loads and removes it in a single trip. Mick George has over 5,000 containers in service, with next-day delivery often available.
How much does it cost to remove rubbish?
Skip hire starts from £99, a skip bag from £61.25 ex VAT plus £34.00 collection, and wait and load skip hire from £160.00 ex VAT; grab hire and man and van are quoted per load or per visit. The price depends on five things: how much waste you have, what type it is (inert hardcore and garden waste cost less than mixed general waste, and plasterboard or asbestos cost more), where you are, whether the skip needs a council permit to sit on the road, and how long you keep it. The cheapest option is usually the one sized and typed to match your waste rather than the smallest container.
Are you a licensed waste carrier, and why does that matter when I book waste removal?
Yes. Mick George is registered with the Environment Agency as an upper tier waste carrier, broker and dealer, and operates over 40 permitted waste facilities including transfer stations and recycling plants. It matters because the law makes you responsible for your waste until it reaches an authorised site: if an unlicensed collector fly-tips it, you can be fined even though you paid them. Before booking anyone, check their registration on the Environment Agency’s public register, ask where the waste will be taken, and expect a waste transfer note. A quote that is far below everyone else’s usually means the disposal is not being paid for.
Where does my waste go after it's collected, and how much of it is recycled?
Skip and collection waste goes to a Mick George transfer station or materials recycling facility, where it is screened, shredded and sorted by machine and by hand into wood, metal, hardcore, plastics, paper and card for recycling. What cannot be recycled is turned into refuse derived fuel for energy recovery rather than buried, and we can provide verified 100% landfill diversion for your waste. Inert material such as hardcore and soil is crushed and screened into recycled aggregate that goes back into construction. Business customers receive waste reports showing the tonnage and destination of each stream.
What is my duty of care when getting rid of household or business waste?
You must make sure your waste is handed only to a registered waste carrier and ends up at a properly permitted site. For householders, that means checking the carrier’s registration and keeping a record of who took the waste; if it is later fly-tipped, you can receive a fixed penalty or be prosecuted. Businesses have a stronger duty: store waste securely, describe it accurately, use a registered carrier, and keep a waste transfer note for every collection for at least two years, or a consignment note for hazardous waste. Mick George issues the paperwork automatically, so booking with us satisfies the documentation side of the duty.
Do you handle both domestic and commercial waste?
Yes. Mick George provides skips, skip bags and single item collections for householders alongside commercial skips, roll-on roll-off containers, grab hire, commercial waste bins and hazardous and asbestos disposal for businesses, trades and construction sites, and has done so for over 40 years. Domestic customers can book and pay online with next-day delivery often available; businesses can open a credit account, set up scheduled collections and receive waste reporting for compliance. The same transfer stations and recycling facilities handle both, so household and business waste is treated to the same recycling standard.
