We recognise that the subject of asbestos is often difficult to understand which is why we’ve created a series of frequently asked questions (FAQ’s) which we hope will clarify any uncertainty.

Who's responsibility is it to manage Asbestos?
If you are a landlord, tenant or managing agent of a commercial property built before 2000, by law you must have an asbestos register in place at all times.
If your commercial property has previously been shown to contain asbestos you must have an Asbestos Management Plan and risk register which should be updated annually.
If you plan to undertake any refurbishment or demolition work, you must have a Refurbishment and Demolition Survey.
If you are a homeowner, you do not have a legal duty to manage asbestos under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, but you are required to protect anyone carrying out work at your property. You may also need a Refurbishment & Demolition Survey if planning any refurbishment work.
What types of Asbestos Survey are available?
In general, there are three types of Asbestos Survey commonly carried out:
– Management Survey: Its purpose is to locate, as far as reasonably practicable, the presence and extent of any suspect ACMs in the building which could be damaged or disturbed during normal occupancy, including foreseeable maintenance and installation, and to assess their condition.
– Refurbishment and Demolition Survey: Needed before any refurbishment or demolition work is carried out and is used to locate and describe, as far as reasonably practicable, all ACMs in the area where the refurbishment work will take place or in the whole building if demolition is planned.
– Pre-Purchase Survey: To provide homebuyers with peace of mind that the property is safe and free of asbestos related risks. This report is increasingly required to satisfy the terms of lenders for new and re-mortgages, as well as speeding up the process for property selling.
Is Asbestos still present today?
Restrictions on the use of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM’s) were not introduced until the late 20th century, which means these hazardous materials are still hugely prevalent today in commercial premises built beforehand, and within an estimated 11 million UK homes.

What Asbestos Management services do we provide?
From site inspection and surveys to stripping and disposal, Mick George Environmental is fully accredited by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to test, manage and complete works for non-licensed, notifiable non-licensed and licensed asbestos and asbestos contaminated materials.
Our Asbestos Management service incorporates asbestos surveys, analysis, and removal, as well as more complex encapsulation, repair and cleansing requirements
Is Asbestos dangerous?
When broken, asbestos releases fine fibres into the atmosphere that can be inhaled and cause the disfunction of vital body organs, contributing towards diseases such as Lung Cancer, Asbestosis and Mesothelioma.
Are Mick George Environmental Approved?
Mick George Environmental is fully accredited by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and accredited members of ARCA – the Asbestos Removal Contractors Association.

What is the process for Asbestos Removal?
Any area where Asbestos is present will be sealed off using polythene and timber to create an airtight enclosure, which will contain asbestos airborne fibres. In addition, controlled wetting techniques such as spraying and injection, and, or air monitoring practices may be employed to ensure control levels are never exceeded and that the area concerned is safe for reoccupation.
What Sectors do we complete Asbestos Removal in?
We have extensive asbestos removal experience in a range of sectors, including demolition, government agencies, health authorities, industrial, commercial and residential properties, manufacturing, retail and education, as well as contaminated land remediation.
Do we Decontaminate after Asbestos Removal?
Yes, to complete the Asbestos Removal process, our decontamination procedures will remove all remaining debris, residues and traces of the asbestos removal works from surfaces and the surrounding locality.
What Asbestos Disposal techniques do we apply?
Our asbestos disposal services incorporate double bagging and wrapping, bonded Asbestos and providing enclosed storage containers for bonded and fibrous asbestos. Our services are perfectly suited to dispose of asbestos products, such as asbestos floor tiles, asbestos roof tiles, and asbestos insulation board (AIB), among many other associated materials.
