Frequently Asked Questions
Can wood go in a normal skip, or is a wood skip better?
Wood can go in a normal general waste skip, but if most of your waste is timber, a wood skip is usually the cheaper option.
Keeping wood separate also means it can be recycled without being sorted out of mixed rubbish. Choose general waste only if the wood is mixed with plastics, rubble or household items.
Can you get a skip just for wood?
Yes. Mick george wood waste skips come in 6, 8, 12 and 16 yard sizes, including an enclosed 16 yard skip. Wood is light, so wood skips can be much larger than skips for heavy waste such as rubble. That makes them a good fit for bulky jobs like taking down a shed, replacing fencing or decking, or clearing out wooden furniture.
What types of wood can go in a wood waste skip?
A wood skip takes timber and wooden items only. That includes offcuts, planks, pallets, fence panels and posts, decking, sheds, floorboards, internal doors, skirting boards and wooden furniture. Nails, screws and small hinges can stay in. Remove glass, upholstery, mattresses and large metal parts first, because these contaminate the load.
Can painted or varnished wood go in a wood skip?
Yes, in most cases. Painted, stained and varnished wood from everyday items, such as furniture, internal doors, skirting boards and shelving, can go in a wood skip.
The exception is painted or treated external timber from buildings built before 2007, such as fascias and window frames. Older paints and preservatives can contain lead or other harmful chemicals, so these items are classed as hazardous unless tested.
Can MDF, chipboard and plywood go in a wood waste skip?
Yes. MDF, chipboard, plywood and OSB are all wood-based boards and can go in a Mick George wood skip. This includes laminated boards from kitchen and bedroom units. Before loading, remove glass, metal handles and drawer runners, and any worktops made of stone or composite.
What wood is banned from a wood skip, and why are railway sleepers classed as hazardous?
Hazardous wood cannot go in any standard skip. That includes:
- Railway sleepers and telegraph poles
- Timber treated with creosote, such as old fencing and farm buildings
- Ten external and structural items from buildings built before 2007, including fascias, soffits, external doors, roof timbers and tiling battens, unless a test proves them safe.
Railway sleepers are hazardous because they are soaked in creosote, a tar-based preservative containing chemicals that can cause cancer. Mick George can arrange a separate hazardous waste collection.
How do you get rid of a lot of scrap wood?
For large amounts, a dedicated wood skip is usually the simplest option. Businesses with ongoing volumes may be better served by a roll on roll off container.
What happens to the wood from my skip? Is it recycled?
Yes. Wood from Mick George skips goes to a Mick George recycling facility, where metal and other contaminants are removed and the timber is shredded. The wood chip is then supplied to manufacturers to make new MDF and chipboard, or used in products such as animal bedding and biomass fuel. Keeping wood in a dedicated skip gives it the best chance of being recycled.
