Frequently Asked Questions
How does wait and load skip hire work?
With wait and load, the skip lorry arrives, waits whilst you fill the skip, then takes it away straight away, so there is no skip left on site. You book a 4, 6 or 8 yard general waste skip online and choose a date. The first 15 minutes of loading time is included in the price. You do the loading, as the driver is not able to help. It suits quick clearance and properties with no room for a skip.
How long will the driver wait whilst I load the skip?
The driver waits for 15 minutes, which is included in the booking price. If you need longer, pre-book extra time when you order: it costs £60 per hour, charged in 15 minute blocks. If extra time has not been booked, the driver leaves after 15 minutes whether or not the loading is finished, although you can pay by card over the phone to extend on the day. Having everything ready beside the lorry is the most helpful way to finish on time.Â
When is wait and load better than standard skip hire?
Wait and load is better when your waste is already gathered and can be loaded within 15 to 30 minutes, or when there is nowhere to place a skip. It avoids a skip sitting outside for a week, where neighbours might add their rubbish. It also costs less. If you need hours or days to fill a skip, choose same day skip hire/collection or a standard general waste skip instead.Â
Do I avoid needing a skip permit with wait and load?
No, not if the lorry waits on a public road. Mick George requires a council permit whenever the skip is loaded on public land, even for a short wait, and the permit fee is added to the cost. If the lorry can park on your driveway or other private land, no permit is needed. Allow extra time when booking a roadside wait and load, as permit lead times vary by council.
How should I prepare my waste before the wait and load skip arrives?
Have all your waste piled or bagged as close as possible to where the lorry will park, so loading can start the moment it arrives. Break down bulky items such as cupboards and doors so they lie flat, and line up enough helpers to load quickly, as the driver cannot help. Keep banned items, such as paint, gas bottles and fridges, separate. Clear a route for the lorry, and if the load will take longer than 15 minutes, pre-book extra time.Â
How much does wait and load skip hire cost?
Wait and load skip hire starts from £172.80 + VAT, including 15 minutes of loading time. Extra time costs £60 per hour, charged in 15-minute blocks, and is best booked in advance. The final price depends on the skip size (4, 6 or 8 yard), your location and whether a council permit is needed for loading on the road. A £15 charge applies if you cancel after booking.
What types of waste can I put in a wait and load skip?
Wait and load uses Mick George general waste skips, so it takes the same mixed household and building waste as a standard general waste skip. That includes furniture (not upholstered seating), wood, plastics, metal, packaging and old fixtures. Hazardous items and some electricals are excluded. The skip must be level loaded, and heavy inert waste such as rubble and soil can only fill it three-quarters full, so it stays within the lorry’s weight limit. Our skip waste guide explains in further detail.Â
Can I use wait and load if I have no driveway or space to keep a skip?
Yes. Wait and load is designed for homes with no driveway or space to keep a skip, because the skip never stays on site. The lorry parks on the road outside, you load, and it leaves. Because the skip is loaded on public land, a council permit is still required, and the lorry needs a safe place to stop, about three car lengths long. Tell the team about any access limits, such as narrow streets or parking restrictions, when booking.Â
