Skip Bags
Skip Bags are a great, space-saving alternative to using a skip. Tough and durable, they’re perfect for smaller projects like home renovations or garden improvements that generate less waste.
Skip Bags are sometimes also known as hippo bags, rubble sacks or rubble bags, but they all refer to the same waste bags.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size is a skip bag and how much waste does it hold?
A Mick George skip bag measures 85cm x 85cm x 85cm and holds up to 1 tonne of waste. That suits small home and garden jobs such as a bathroom strip-out, a shed clear-out or a border dig. The bags are made of tough woven polypropylene, so they take heavy materials as well as bulky ones. The asbestos bag is a different shape, at 250cm x 150cm x 30cm, to fit sheets of asbestos cement.
Are skip bags cheaper than skips?
For small amounts of waste, yes. A general waste skip bag costs from £16.66 + VAT, against roughly £100 + VAT for the smallest Mick George skip. There is no council permit, no hire period and no need for space to park a skip. A skip holds far more for the money however if a job would fill two or more bags, it usually works out cheaper.
How much does a skip bag cost?
A general waste skip bag from Mick George costs from £16.66 + VAT. Skip bags are bought rather than hired, so there is no daily charge. If you already have a bag, skip bag collection costs from £34 + VAT. Extra charges apply if a bag contains the wrong waste or cannot be collected on the day.
What cannot go in a skip bag?
Hazardous waste cannot go in a skip bag. That includes paint, oils and other liquids, gas bottles, vapes, computer monitors and TV’s, fridges and freezers, fluorescent tubes and asbestos, which needs the dedicated asbestos bag. Single-material bags, such as hardcore, wood or plasterboard bags must only contain that material, and every bag must weigh under 1 tonne. The skip waste materials guide covers the rules for each waste type.
How does skip bag collection work?
When the bag is full, call Mick George on 0800 587 3329 and send a photo of it. The team checks if the bag meets the collection guidelines, then books a crane lorry to lift it away, usually within 1 to 10 working days. You do not need to be at home during collection. The bag must be filled level, no higher than the printed logo, weigh under 1 tonne and be undamaged. If a split occurs whilst being lifted, the driver leaves an empty bag and returns once it has been refilled.
Where should I place my skip bag so the crane can reach it?
Place the skip bag on your own property, such as a driveway or front garden, where the lorry can pull up alongside it. The crane lifts the bag from the roadside, so it needs parallel access and a clear lift. Keep the bag away from enclosed walls, perimeter walls and fences, overhead cables and trees. Bags cannot be collected from the road or pavement. If access is tight, check with the team before filling the bag.
How long can I keep a skip bag before it’s collected?
There is no time limit. A Mick George skip bag is bought outright rather than hired, so you can keep it for as long as the job takes and book collection when it is full. Until then, the bag can be folded away and used again. Book collection a few days before you need the space back as collections are scheduled rather than completed on the same day.
What else are skip bags called?
Skip bags are also known as builder’s bags, jumbo bags, dumpy bags and FIBCs (flexible intermediate bulk containers). They are all the same type of heavy-duty woven bag. Mick George also collects skip bags bought from other suppliers, which can cost less than the original supplier’s own collection. Book a collection-only service to arrange it.
