Frequently Asked Questions
What size skip do I need for my project?
Most home projects need a 4, 6 or 8 yard skip. A 4 yard skip holds 30 to 40 bin bags, suits a kitchen or bathroom refit. A 6 yard skip holds 50 to 60 bags and suits bulky household waste, garden clearances and heavier loads of soil or rubble. An 8 yard builder’s skip holds 60 to 80 bags for house clearances and larger renovations. The Mick George skip size guide lists exact dimensions.Â
How much does it cost to hire a skip?
Skip hire from Mick George starts at £151 + VAT for a 2-yard general waste skip. The price depends on the skip size, the type of waste, the delivery location and whether the skip needs a council permit to go on the road.Â
Do you pay for skips per day and how long can I keep one?
No, skip hire is not charged by the day. Every Mick George skip includes 7 days’ hire in the price. If the job runs over, call the Mick George team before the collection date to extend your hire. A daily rental charge will only be applied for those days. A skip on the road can stay as long as its council permit, which lasts up to 28 days. If the job finishes early, request a collection and the skip is picked up at the next available slot. For jobs that take a few hours, wait and load skip hire removes the waste the same visit.Â
Do I need a council permit to put a skip on the road?
Yes. A skip placed on a public road needs a permit from the local council, but a skip on a driveway or other private land does not. Mick George arranges the permit in most areas as part of the booking and the fee, which varies by council, is added to the cost. A few councils require the hirer to apply directly but this is confirmed at the time of booking. Permits last up to 28 days, the fee is non–refundable and a roadside skip needs lights and signage.Â
What can’t you put in a skip?
Hazardous waste cannot go in a standard Mick George skip. That includes asbestos, paint tins, oils and other liquids, gas bottles, tyres, fridges and freezers, Tv’s and computer monitors, medical waste, vapes, fluorescent tubes and hazardous wood such as railway sleepers, telegraph poles and creosote-treated timber. Some materials are accepted but need their own skip: plasterboard goes in a plasterboard skip and asbestos in an enclosed asbestos skip. For anything else, check the skip waste materials guide or call 0800 597 3329 for further information.
Where can a skip be placed and what access does the delivery lorry need?
A skip can go on a driveway or other private land with the owner’s permission, or on the road with a council permit. The lorry needs a clear route at least 2.9 metres (9ft 6in) wide, 22ft of height clearance with no overhead cables, and a dropped curb as it cannot mount a raised curb or drive onto grass. It must be able to reverse into position, and it will require about three car lengths to do this. Skips cannot be lifted over walls or fences, and placing one on block paving or soft tarmac is at the customer’s risk. Full details can be found in our skip placement guidelines.Â
Why can’t a skip be filled above the top and what is a level load?
A level load means no waste sits higher than the sides of the skip. The law requires every load carried on the road to be secure. And anything above the rim could fall from the lorry or push the skip over its safe weight. Mick Goerge only collects skips that are level loaded, so the driver can refuse to lift an overfilled skip until the excess is removed, and a wasted journey charge may apply.Â
Why is skip hire so expensive?
Most of the price of a skip goes on disposing of the waste, not the skip itself. Waste that cannot be recycled carries landfill tax of £130.75 per tonne, on top of sorting and processing at recycling facilities. The price also covers two trips by an 18-tonne lorry and driver, a week’s hire and any council permit. For small amounts, a skip bag is usually cheaper.Â
