Frequently Asked Questions
Do you provide bins for specific waste types?
Yes, our range includes:
- Dry Mixed Recycling Bins for paper, plastics, and cans
- Food Waste Bins for organic materials and leftovers
- Glass Waste Bins for bottles and jars
- Cardboard & Paper Bins for clean, dry packaging
Each bin type is designed to support easy, compliant, and sustainable waste management.
How much does a commercial waste bin cost?
The bin itself is free. Mick George supplies commercial wheelie bins at no charge and you pay per collection, so the price depends on the bin size, the waste type and how often it is emptied. A 240 litre dry mixed recycling or cardboard bin is the cheapest to service, while general and food waste cost more because of disposal charges. Bins run from 120 to 1,100 litres, with 8 and 10 yard front end loader containers for larger sites. A commercial waste quote gives a per-collection price for your postcode.Â
Do I need to buy my own commercial wheelie bins, or are they supplied?
No. Mick George supplies and delivers the bins as part of the collection service, so there is nothing to buy. The bins remain our property and are repaired or replaced if they are damaged through normal use. This is usually better value than buying wheelie bins outright, because a business still has to pay a licensed carrier to empty what goes in them. Choose from 120, 240, 360, 660 and 1,100 litre wheelie bins, or static front end loader containers for high volumes, and we match the size to each waste stream.
Do businesses have to pay for waste disposal?
Yes. Business waste is not covered by council bin collections, so every business must pay a licensed waste carrier to collect and dispose of it. There is also a legal duty of care: waste must be stored securely, handed only to a registered carrier and recorded on a waste transfer note. What you pay depends on how much you produce and how well it is separated. Recycling streams cost less to collect than general waste, and clean cardboard in volume can earn a waste rebate rather than costing money to remove.
What are the workplace recycling rules my business has to follow?
Workplaces in England with ten or more full-time equivalent employees must separate their waste into food waste, dry mixed recycling (paper and card, plastic, metal and glass) and residual general waste, and arrange a collection for each stream. Smaller workplaces are given longer before the same duties apply, and Wales and Scotland have their own workplace recycling rules. Mick George provides a compliant set of bins for each stream and a single collection schedule, so meeting the requirement does not mean managing several suppliers. Our Simpler Recycling page explains what each stream must contain.
Is there a minimum contract for commercial waste collection, and what notice do I need to give?
Regular scheduled collections are normally on a 12 month agreement, and you need to give written notice before the renewal date to end or change it. Short-term or one-off bin collections can be arranged without a long commitment. During the agreement you can change bin sizes or collection frequency as your waste volumes change, for example adding a food waste bin or moving from fortnightly to weekly collections, without starting a new contract. Your quote confirms the term and notice period before you sign anything.
Can I switch to a new waste collection provider if I'm still in a contract?
Usually only at the end of your current term, or by paying an early termination charge, so check your contract first. Most waste contracts renew automatically unless notice is given within a set window, often three months before the end date, and missing that window can lock you in for another year. Find your end date and notice period, serve notice in writing, and we will schedule bin delivery to start the day after your old service ends so there is no gap.Â
Is there a weight limit on commercial bins, and what happens if a bin is too heavy or overfilled?
Yes. Each bin has a maximum weight that depends on the waste inside it. A 240 litre bin takes up to 10 kg of dry mixed recycling and cardboard or 80 kg of food waste; the limits for recycling and cardboard rise to 15 kg in a 360 litre bin, 20 kg in a 660 litre bin and 35 kg in a 1,100 litre bin. The lid must also close. An overweight or overfilled bin cannot be lifted safely onto the vehicle, so the crew may leave it, charge for the excess or return later at a cost. If you regularly hit the limit, a larger size or more frequent collection is cheaper than repeat charges; our full bin size guide lists every limit.
What happens if a collection is missed or I need an extra one?
Report a missed collection to us on 0800 587 3329 and we will return, normally on the next working day. If the bin was missed because it was not out, overfilled, too heavy, contaminated or blocked by a vehicle, the return visit may be charged, so the driver’s notes are checked first. Extra collections can be booked at any time at your normal per-collection rate, which is useful for seasonal peaks, clearances or an unexpectedly busy week. Customers with regular schedules can also move a collection day for bank holidays or site closures by letting the team know in advance.
