Aggregate Frequently Asked Questions
How do I work out how much aggregate I need for my project?
To work out how much aggregate you need, simply multiply the area length by it’s width and then multiply by the depth in metres. Use our aggregate calculator to help you order the required amount for your project.
How much area does a bulk bag of aggregate cover?
An 800kg bulk bag of aggregate or gravel will typically cover 10m² at a depth of 50mm. Coverage amounts vary between products and it is best to use an aggregate calculator to accurately work out how many bulk bags are required for your job.
Should I order bulk bags or a loose load?
Bulk bags are better for smaller scale projects typically requiring less than 5 tonnes of aggregates or where access does not allow for an alternative method.
For larger projects, loose loads will considerably reduce your overall costs, by reducing the price per tonne of the material.
What is the difference between primary and recycled aggregates?
Primary aggregates are extracted directly from quarries and other natural sources, whereas recycled aggregates are produced by processing construction or excavation waste into industry graded reusable materials.
The Mick George Group supply a wide range of quality primary and recycled aggregates, suitable for commercial, trade and residential projects.
Which aggregate is best for a driveway or garden path?
Using Type 1 MOT Granite as a sub base for block paving, or using 20mm Gravel are the most popular choices for driveways, providing a solid foundation and high level of durability.
Most people prioritise appearance over functionality for garden paths and 4-10mm Garden Gravel is an excellent choice, offering a stunning finish with impressive drainage capabilities.
What are the four main types of aggregates?
Crushed stone, sand, gravel, and recycled aggregates are the four main types of aggregates for construction and landscaping. Each type of aggregate boasts different properties, making them suitable for a wide range of projects.
Do you deliver aggregates, and which areas do you cover?
Yes, The Mick George group provides bulk bags of aggregates for projects of any size, from small domestic work to large industrial projects.
Ideal for smaller domestic projects, Mick George delivers Bulk Bags nationwide whilst loose loads of aggregates for larger quantity requirements are available for delivery within the Cambridgeshire, Leicestershire, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire, Suffolk and Norfolk regions.
Where can the delivery be dropped, and do I need to be there?
You do not need to be present for the Bulk Bag delivery, but it is crucial that you inform us of any preferential drop locations. Bulk Bags cannot be placed on public land and delivery will be made via a Hiab vehicle (a lorry-mounted crane) on private property only.
Delivery information is available on all bulk bag products within the dedicated ‘delivery information’ tab.
Can I collect aggregates myself instead of having them delivered?
Yes, our aggregate collection service is available from 7 separate operating facilities across Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk; all of which supply aggregates at reduced rates from the traditional charges applied for delivery.
Although booking is not essential, we would advise that you call us on 0800 587 3329 to speed up your visit.
Where do your aggregates come from, and are they quality assured?
As owners of multiple quarries, the Mick George Group supply quality aggregates from separate locations throughout Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, Buckinghamshire and Norfolk.
Supplying aggregates of the highest quality, Mick George holds a Royal Warrant of Appointment as a Tradesman to the King for the supply of Crushed and Graded Aggregates alongside a number of accreditations including UKAS ISO 14001, UKAS ISO 45001 and UKAS ISO 9001 for the supply of aggregates.
