What is Decking Framing?

The process of framing a deck includes creating connections between joists, beams and support posts in order to build a compliant deck structure.

Framing is perhaps the most important phase of deck building. If the structure is not designed to carry the required load, or if the framing is not level or square, building the remaining deck features like railing and stairs will be frustrating and difficult.

If you want your deck to last and more importantly, be a safe place to spend time with your family and friends, its important that you start with a solid foundation and frame your decking.

Where is Decking Framing Used?

A popular method for creating decking framing is raising a deck frame by setting a footing. It gives the structure a solid footing which is incredibly strong and durable. This helps give the deck a longer lifespan as the structure is securely fixed.

Many people choose to lay their decking frame on concrete slabs. These help if you plan on laying your deck directly on the ground.

All decking requires the same materials underneath the frame – ledger, joists, beams and support posts in solid footings. If you’re building an on-grade deck you might not need railings, posts or steps.

Pressure-treated timber is ideal for deck framing. We also recommend using joist tape or a wood protectant to help shield cut ends from moisture damage.
