Bricks

brick is a type of block used to build walls, pavements and other elements in masonry construction. The term brick denotes a block composed of dried clay, but is now also used informally to denote other chemically cured construction blocks.

Bricks are usually merged by interlocking techniques using mortar or adhesives and can be built-up into complex shapes and designs.

Different Types of Bricks

Red Bricks

Red coloured bricks are the most common colour for residential buildings, however ensuring the correct colour match is of great importance.

Red bricks are made by mixing clay, water, and aggregate together. They have been around for more than 10,000 years and are still extremely common today.

Red bricks can be used as a structural material for the construction of structures like buildings, foundations, arches, pavement and bridges. These can be also used for aesthetic purposes like landscaping, facing works and many other architectural purposes.

Engineering Bricks

Engineering bricks are a type of brick used where strength, low water porosity or acid resistance are needed. They are used for their physical characteristics and not their appearance and are only classified by these properties.

Engineering bricks are rated as Class A or Class B, with Class A being the strongest but Class B being more common. Class A engineering bricks have a compressive strength greater than 125N/mm² and water absorption less than 4.5%.

They were traditionally used in civil engineering and are most suitable for applications where strength and resistance to frost attack and water are important. Examples of situations where engineering bricks are used include ground-works, manholes, sewers, retaining walls and damp proof courses.

Brick Colours

Many people wrongly assume that in the UK, bricks come in limited colours, and that brick texture is universal across the board but that isn’t the case.

A brick can have various colours, there are three important factors that determine the outcome of what colour the brick will be. To begin with, the clay will determine the base colour of the brick. This is the colour you would see if you was to cut the brick in the half and look inside the centre of it.

Yellow Bricks

Yellow bricks offer a warm, subtle look giving golden tones to your project. It is ideal for both contemporary and more traditional projects.

Yellow bricks are often used for period or restoration projects, whilst also being specified for more contemporary buildings.

Facing Bricks

Facing bricks are the most popular type of brick and have been the façade material of choice in the UK for thousands of years, particularly in the housing market.

These bricks may lack the tensile strength of engineering bricks, which are used for structural brickwork, although bricks for facing can also be used for structural applications in some cases.

Facing bricks are the materials used in making of the facades, i.e. the principal front of the building. Facing bricks are manufactured with the purpose of being visible and thus offered in aesthetic and pleasing designs in the market.

Textured Bricks

The soft-mud process produces either a sand– or water-struck finish in a nonuniform texture, which gives the brick (only bricks are made under this process) the appearance of handmade or antique brick.

The machine immediately wets the clay to give the brick a special, lightly structured texture. The visible surface of a Water struck brick is not smooth, but has slight texture

They’re made with clay and manufactured to be weather resistant – something important in the UK’s classic wet & windy climate.

Fire Pit Bricks

Fire pit bricks, also known as refractory bricks are used in blast furnaces because of their low thermal conductivity and insulate the heat from the furnace.

Fire pit bricks provide double the benefit of making the furnace hotter and more efficient, as well as protecting the outside of the furnace from excess heat.

Fire pit bricks are frequently used to construct kilns, furnaces and other high temperature enclosures. The refractory brick reduces heat loss and the chance of an unintended fire.

Brick Types

There are three main types of bricks – facing bricks, engineering bricks and common bricks. However, there are many more variations, styles and manufacturing processes that make different bricks suitable for different jobs.

Facing bricks are the most popular type of brick and have been the façade material of choice in the UK for thousands of years, particularly in the housing market.

Engineering bricks have high compressive strength and low water absorption. They are used for their physical characteristics and not their appearance and are only classified by these properties.

Despite their name, common bricks are actually the least common brick types in the UK. They tend to have lower compressive strengths than facing bricks or engineering bricks and are generally lower quality. There is also less focus put into a consistent appearance on common bricks.

Brick Prices

Bricks are usually priced per thousand and can vary in cost ranging from cheap common bricks at £200/1000 through to high end handmade or glazed bricks at £3 each.

Although, getting a single price is not always that simple. Brick prices fluctuate and are heavily dependent on external factors such as the supply / demand of bricks within the UK and the availability of raw materials.

While the industry has since recovered to reasonable levels, the Government’s ambitious target of building 300,000 new homes by mid-2020 and implementation of the ‘Help-to-Buy’ scheme placed a significant strain on local manufacturers and ultimately put a spotlight on UK brick production.
