What are Bricks?

A brick is a type of block used to build walls, pavements and other elements in masonry construction. The term brick denotes a block composed of dried clay, but is now also used informally to denote other chemically cured construction blocks.

Bricks are usually merged by interlocking techniques using mortar or adhesives and can be built-up into complex shapes and designs.

Clay is still the main brick material, but other common materials include sand and lime, concrete, and fly ash.

Bricks are small and easy to handle, can be extremely strong in compression, are durable and low maintenance.

There are three main types of bricks – facing bricks, engineering bricks and common bricks. However, there are many more variations, styles and manufacturing processes that make different bricks suitable for different jobs.

Where are Bricks Used?

Bricks are the most abundant and natural material on earth. Bricks have been used for building innumerable structures over many thousands of years because of their durability.

Brick houses can last at least 100 years with minimal maintenance. With regular care and attention, including mortar repointing, brick houses can last 500 years or more.

Bricks are a clean natural material that doesn’t impact the environment. Bricks are fired at temperatures so high that organic materials are eradicated. A house made entirely of bricks is an investment, and it pays off in the short-term and long-run.

We have a wide range of bricks available, from facing bricks to engineering bricks, we can supply you with the right style, quality and quantity for construction on new projects or repairing existing areas.

Different types of Bricks

There are three main types of bricks – facing bricks, engineering bricks and common bricks. However, there are many more variations, styles and manufacturing processes that make different bricks suitable for different jobs.

Facing bricks are the most popular type of brick and have been the façade material of choice in the UK for thousands of years, particularly in the housing market.

Engineering bricks have high compressive strength and low water absorption. They are used for their physical characteristics and not their appearance and are only classified by these properties.

Despite their name, common bricks are actually the least common brick types in the UK. They tend to have lower compressive strengths than facing bricks or engineering bricks and are generally lower quality.

Brick Installation

It’s not a project for the casual homeowner without handyman skills. A brick wall, which will require mortar, is a difficult project. Experts say that you shouldn’t even try to build a brick wall over 4 feet high (1.2 meters) on your own unless you are an experienced bricklayer.
