Roof Insulation
Roof insulation involves fitting insulating material between and over the rafters (the sloping timbers that make up the roof itself).
What is Roof Insulation?
Roof insulation involves fitting insulating material between and over the rafters (the sloping timbers that make up the roof itself). This can be done with rigid insulation boards, cut to size, or alternatively you can have foam insulation sprayed between the rafters.
Just over a quarter of  heat is lost through the roof in an uninsulated home. Therefore, insulating your roof is an effective way to reduce heat loss and reduce your heating bills. If installed correctly, roof insulation can pay back your investment many times throughout its 40-year lifetime.
Some of the most well-known manufacturers of roof insulation are Knauf, Kingspan, Thermafleece, Warmcell, Ecotherm. Most manufacturers don’t sell their product direct to the public, so it’s best to purchase via an installer, local DIY shop or a builders’ merchant.
The Mick George Group have an excellent range of insulation materials which are perfect for any size construction projects you might have.
Roof Insulation Expert Tips
When installing roof insulation, its important you are fully prepared for the task ahead to make your roof insulation the most beneficial. You must be aware of the following tips before you start with your roof insulation:
- Always unwrap Mineral Wool insulation in the loft – Our Mineral Wool insulation is compressed to make it easier to store and transport. However, when you unwrap it the Loft Roll insulation will recover to ten times the compressed thickness and will be impossible to get through a small loft hatch.
- Crawl Board – To make sure you don’t compress the insulation and to reduce the risk of falling through the ceiling, use a crawl board that spans a minimum of three joists. Start at the point furthest away from the loft hatch and work towards it.
- PPE – You need to take care when working with products which can release airborne fibres or particles, such as glass mineral wool. Wearing the correct clothing, such as overalls, a face mask, safety glasses and a hat, will help to avoid the risk of direct skin contact.
- Existing Insulation – There is a good chance that your home could benefit from an additional layer of insulation, especially if it’s over ten years old. It doesn’t matter how long the current insulation has been in the loft; it can be topped up at any age
- Insulating your loft hatch – Your loft hatch will also need to be insulated and draught proofed to reduce heat escaping through into the roof space as well as prevent condensation build-up.
One of the most common and effective ways to insulate your roof is with polyurethane spray foam. This spray-applied plastic is known to be highly effective for sealing any cracks as well as resisting wind and heat. The foam is applied to the underside of your roof deck and directly onto the slates and tiles.

Give or take, about 25% of the heat produced by your boiler will escape through the roof of your home. About 35% of the heat will escape through the walls and through gaps, in and around windows and doors, and about 10% of heat will disappear through the floor.
