Floor Insulation
Insulating a floor means adding an insulating material beneath the floorboards, thereby reducing heat escaping through the floor into the ground.
What is Floor Insulation?
Insulating a floor means adding insulating materials beneath the floorboards, thereby reducing heat escaping through the floor into the ground. Through floor insulation, you can reduce your home’s carbon emissions, increase comfort and lower your energy bills.
About 30% of heat from an average home is lost through the ground floor. Generally speaking, you only need to insulate the ground floor. If you’re on an upper floor, you don’t usually need to insulate your floor.
However, we recommend that you consider insulating any floors that are above unheated spaces, such as garages, as you may be losing a lot of heat through them.
Floor insulation is most commonly done when putting a new floor in place, but most floors can be retrofitted with insulating material, and this will make a large saving to your overall heating bill.
Floor Insulation Benefits
The benefits of having floor insulation can be significant. 10-20% of heat loss from a building can be through the floors if they’re not insulated to a reasonable standard. According to the Energy Saving Trust you could save between £40-£65 on your energy bill through floor insulation.
When you stack that against other savings you can make on insulating the rest of your house plus the length of time you’ll live in your home, the savings can add up.
- Reduced Heat Waste – Heat rises, so insulating your house properly means you keep more heat inside the house.
- Savings – As you keep more heat inside your home with floor insulation you’ll reduce the amount of energy you use (and therefore your bill) whilst keeping your house snug.
- Maintenance free – Once installed correctly, floor insulation requires no on going maintenance.
- Future Proofs Your Home – Unlike newer buildings, many older houses were not fitted with floor insulation when they were first built, so by investing in floor insulation you can bring your house up to date and improve your EPC ratings.
Insulations boards or EPS sheets are a material that is an expanded polystyrene sheet. It is one of the best-known floor insulation materials because EPS sheets are easy to install and have a high insulation value.

Generally, if possible, insulating concrete below the concrete floor is the best form of installation. This is because the concrete helps to absorb the heat much better, whilst also preventing the room from overheating.

After the insulation is in place you will want to add a vapor retarder, sometimes called a vapor barrier, if you need one.
Not every wall does. A vapor retarder is a material used to prevent water vapor from diffusing into the wall, ceiling or floor during the cold winter.

The easiest way is to simply lift the floor boards and install the insulation between the floor joists (after you have fully checked them for damp and rot and carried out any necessary repairs).
Then relay the floor boards and finish with your chosen floor finish.

When your insulation gets wet, the insulation is not able to repel the heat back into the inside space, and instead, it conducts the energy. This means your insulation is less effective and will result in heat loss.
