The older generation in Leicestershire will be glad to learn of a major restoration project that has been completed by Age UK, Leicester Shire & Rutland at Clarence House, the charity’s largest community resource centre which is situated on Humberstone Gate, in the heart of Leicester City.

The project owes largely to the Mick George Group, a local construction specialist who generously donated £45,750 in its entirety. The firm originally granted £35,750 but following inspection which established the full extent of the upgrades required, the Company kindly donated a further £10,000 towards the cause.

The predominant focus of the refurbishment works at the Great Hall were to eradicate the leaking roof which was consequently causing damage to the internal fixtures, as well to replace the existing inefficient heating system that was only estimated to be working at 50% capacity.

This Grade II listed, heritage building plays host to diverse range of services and wellbeing activities for the over 50’s, each satisfying the growing needs of the 600 elderly residents that are expected to attend each day. These include healthcare, social and educational classes, ranging from Line Dancing, Tai Chi and Zumba, to Dementia Respite Care and Digital Inclusion.

The upgrades will prevent further cancellations during periods of inclement weather, while also providing a more welcoming environment which should further appeal to prospective visitors.

Plans are now being formulated to address loose and damaged masonry identified during a more recent site survey.

Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland is a local independent charity which promotes older peoples wellbeing by helping make later life more fulfilling and enjoyable. They are committed to maintaining the dignity, privacy and independence of older people by providing a range of relevant services which meet their needs.

Nick Ladlow, Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland said: ‘’The Great Hall now has an efficient more environmentally friendly heating system and the roof is completely watertight.

The project has enabled people from a variety of backgrounds to engage with our services including; friends, family members and carers, giving a holistic intervention whereby beneficiaries can access further support, information and advice, aimed at reducing social isolation and improving both mental and physical wellbeing.

All of which will have a positive impact on society, helping this demographic maintain their dignity and independence. We’re very grateful to the Mick George Group for their contribution.’’
