Garden Gravel

Gravel is a loose aggregation of small, variously sized fragments of rock with a wide range of applications.

The weathering and erosion of rocks is the natural process by which gravel deposits are formed.

Gravel can also be produced in quarries, where rocks such as sandstone, limestone and basalt are crushed down to size.

Popular types of gravel include:

• Pea Gravel
• Limestone Gravel
• Slate Gravel
• Granite Gravel
• Basalt
• Self-binding gravels

Gravel particle sizes range from 2mm to over 60mm, and are available in a range of colours, textures and stone materials.

Gravel can be used in the filtration of water, where it acts as a natural filter holding back precipitates which may contain impurities as well as other sand-sized particles.

The angularity and hardness of gravel makes it resistant to water erosion.

Gravel is extremely versatile and can be applied in a number of different domestic and commercial settings.

Gravel is commonly used for landscaping applications, including driveways, walkways, or as a decorative filler over soil instead of grass.

Practical uses of Gravel, when combined with sand, include the manufacture of concrete, as well as for mixing with asphalt as part of road construction. It can be used as the base layer for highways before a surface layer is added.

Other practical applications include roof coverings and pebbledash.

When it comes to forming Gravel driveways or pathways, angular gravels are best as they remain in place when receiving vehicle or foot traffic, when compared to a more rounded product.

To avoid pieces constantly being caught in tyre treads and footwear soles, we would recommend gravels graded 14mm or 20mm at a minimum.

Pea gravel is often confused for crushed stone, but these two aggregates are different. Crushed stone is typically larger than pea gravel, coarser to the touch, and is usually only available in shades of white or grey.

Pea gravel, also known as pea shingle, consists of small stones with rounded edges that have become smooth as a result of natural weathering. The stones are very small, usually only around 6-10mm, and come in a range of colours.

While it is ok to apply Garden Gravel directly onto a firm soil or sub-base, we would advise that you place weed membrane underneath the gravel ease future maintenance.
