What are Decking Spindles?

A decking spindle is the closely spaced supports used to hold up a waist-high handrail, safely containing people inside a staircase or patio deck.

A decking spindle is both practical and decorative, providing style and support to the boundary rail system.

Decking spindles are commonly made with 2×2 lumber and installed vertically. You can buy pre-cut 2 x 2s or milled balusters in lengths that will fit standard railings.

In order to comply with building regulations, balusters must be spaced no more than 4 inches apart on centre.

Where are Decking Spindles Used?

Decking spindles are used as rail components used to provide infill for deck guardrails. For all but the most basic low-level deck, the incorporation, design and construction of a decking spindle should be treated as an integral part of the overall project and not a feature to be added at a later date.

It offers a reassuring safety element to any raised edge, even when the level is quite low.

Building regulations require that when there are flights of stairs, landings or raised areas in a single-family dwelling, there must be a decking spindle if the difference between the adjacent levels is more than 600mm.

A decking spindle is attached with little more than a mortise and tenon rig at the bottom and a couple of nails at the rail.

Why Include Decking Spindles?

First, decking spindles support the handrail. Balusters also close the gaps between posts, acting as safety features by eliminating excess space through which someone could fall.

Decking Spindle Positioning

While a decking spindle can touch the deck, they often have a bottom railing to hold them in place.

Composite decking spindles never touch the deck and are held in place four inches or less from the top of the deck’s surface.

Decking Spindle Installation

The most common installation style of baluster is fastening the spindles in the middle of the top and bottom rails.

This can be done either by using a coordinating connector at either end of the baluster or by routeing out a small hole in the two rails for each baluster to be inserted into.
