Ballast: The Ideal Construction Solution.

As a business that has produced and supplied Ballast to construction professionals for over 40-years, we know what works and what doesn’t, which is why we’re passionate about finding the best solutions for our clients.

Any credible builder will testify that Ballast is a crucial part of any construction project, it provides stability and support to everything else that’s going on, and it’s essential to have a solid foundation for developments of any scale. That’s why we supply All in Ballast that gives builders and tradesmen the best possible chance of success on every project.

What is Ballast?

Ballast is a dense mixture of gravel and sand which forms a rough, coarse aggregate used in an extensive range of construction applications. Primarily, this aggregate is used in heavy-duty work and for practical uses such as making concrete.

Where is Ballast Used?

When Ballast is added to cement, it binds the aggregate particles together, forming strong foundations or base layers for garden walls or sheds, as well as for creating path edgings and kerb ledges. Ballast can also be used to safely secure fencing posts in place.

Ballast can also be used for a variety of applications in larger construction development too, including mortars, screeds and renders, as well as in pre-cast concrete and block production. Ballast is often utilised to weigh down and protect pipes or cables that are buried in the ground, to prevent accidental damage. Other uses for Ballast include:

  • Footings
  • Foundations
  • Slabs
  • Columns
  • Walls
  • Retaining walls
  • Bridge abutments
  • Underpasses
  • Parking garages
  • Sewer and water systems

Ballast Alternatives

There are a few alternatives to using All in Ballast in construction, but we believe that it’s the best option for the majority of projects.

One alternative is using structural fill, which is a mix of sand, gravel and cement. This is a viable option for smaller projects, or when you need to fill in a specific area that’s not wide or deep.

Another option is using a polymeric sand. This is made up of small stones and sand, and it’s designed to bind together to create a solid surface. It’s popular because it’s easy to use and doesn’t require any special equipment. However, it can be expensive and it can take a while for the sand to cure properly.
