What is PSE Timber?

PSE stands for Planed Square Edge, which is a finished state of timber where the four sides are smooth and only the ends are rough where cut to length.

This makes for a smart and smooth finish that is perfect to use anywhere that the wood is visible.

As PSE timber is used for jobs where the wood will be visible,  it tends to be found in places like furniture, shelving, and sash windows where people want a more natural look than using PVC.

The Mick George Group have a full range of PSE timber that are suitable for all construction projects.

Difference between rough and planed timber

Rough sawn is timber that has been cut down using a saw, the texture of the wood is rough and there’s plenty of splinter-potential if you were to run your hand down it. This type of ‘finish’ is most typically seen in fencing products like posts and is ideal for jobs where the wood won’t be seen.

Planed timber is the finished product that has been planed to remove that rough outer layer. It allows the grain of the wood to show through and is smooth when you run your hand along the surface.

PSE in Timber

PSE means Planed Square Edge, meaning that the edges are not rounded in any way, with each edge having been planed.

It is an alternative to rough sawn timber with the caveat that PSE has had each edge planed perfectly straight, to a smooth finish.

PSE Timber Outside

Even at first glance, PSE timber will make any outdoor structure ‘pop’.

Planning works to expose the prominent grain pattern of oak that makes it so desirable for feature pieces.
