Types of Timber Sheeting

Our timber sheeting materials are square/rectangular planks of wood, of variable densities, shapes and composite materials that are used across domestic and commercial projects in the construction industry.

Our full timber sheeting range includes MDF, OSB and Plywood, all of which is high quality, easy to install and requires minimal preparation.

  • MDF – MDF (Medium Density Fireboard) is an engineered material made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into fine particles, combining it with wax and a resin binder, before applying high temperature and pressure.
  • OSB – Orientated Strand Board, or OSB, is similar to plywood in that the cross-orientation of strands that make up the board give it the same degree of strength and flexibility.
  • Plywood – Plywood is one of the most widely recognized multi-purpose engineered wood-based panel products used in construction projects. These thin sheets are glued together with the wood grain of each layer rotated up to 90 degrees from one another.

Timber Sheeting Explained

Timber sheet materials are structural and non-structural panels engineered from both solid timber and recycled timber using different types of adhesives.

Timber sheets commonly used in construction include Plywood, Medium density Fireboards (MDF), Oriented Strand Boards (OSB), and chipboards.

Plywood

Plywood is one of the most widely recognized multi-purpose engineered wood-based panel products used in construction projects. These thin sheets are glued together with the wood grain of each layer rotated up to 90 degrees from one another.

As a general rule, the thicker the plywood, the more plies it incorporates. Plywood is an engineered form of wood from the same wood family as MDF and chipboard but offers superior strength and durability to these materials.

Plywood Sheets

Plywood sheets are a popular and adaptable material that is made up of wood veneers which are glued in layers to create a consistent and incredibly tough material that produces a hard-wearing and durable panel.

It is one type of manufactured board which can be described as a mixture of Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) and Chip Board (Particle Board). Plywood sheets have become popular through this decade because it’s relatively low moisture content which makes various tasks easy to perform.

MDF

MDF (Medium Density Fireboard) is an engineered material made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into fine particles, combining it with wax and a resin binder, before applying high temperature and pressure.

As it is a versatile product, it is used in many homes and professional projects such as furniture, cabinetry, flooring, internal mouldings and packaging material due to its smooth finish, machinability, strength and consistency.

MDF Sheets

MDF Sheets or Medium-density fireboard sheets are a man made wood that is free from natural defects. MDF is very versatile and suitable for a wide number of internal applications such as internal joinery, panelling, boxing in, furniture, shelving, modelling, shop fittings, and architectural mouldings.

Unlike plywood, MDF sheets don’t have a wood-grain appearance; it has a consistent light-brown colour with no discernible texture or pattern. MDF is much harder, smoother and denser than plywood, and it doesn’t have any voids, knots, or splinters.

MDF Board

Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) is an engineered wood-based sheet material made by bonding together wood fibres with a synthetic resin adhesive.

As a material, MDF boards are extremely versatile and cost-effective, making it a great choice for a whole host of projects. MDF boards aren’t often used as a finish alone but is instead finished with veneer or laminate, giving the impression of real wood.

OSB Board

Orientated Strand Board, or OSB, is similar to plywood in that the cross-orientation of strands that make up the board give it the same degree of strength and flexibility. With these benefits it makes an ideal material for a number of different construction projects.

There’s a variety of DIY projects that OSB boards are fantastic for and you can use it for both interior and exterior use as it’s weather resistant. It’s regularly seen to be used for flooring because of its strength, making it ideal for places like a workshop or a shed.

Marine Plywood

Marine plywood is a hard-wearing wood for use in humid or wet areas.

It’s predominantly used as a building material in marine settings, such as on ships or at docks. Marine plywood performs at its peak when it will receive prolonged exposure to moisture.

CLS Timber

CLS timber has become a lot more popular in the UK in recent years and it’s often the wood of choice for internal structuring jobs.

CLS timber is created from woods such as kiln-dried fir, pine or spruce. During the manufacturing process, it is planed, treated and shaped with four smoothed surfaced sides and distinctive rounded (or radiused) edges.

PSE Timber

PSE stands for Planed Square Edge, which is a finished state of timber where the four sides are smooth and only the ends are rough where cut to length.

This makes for a smart and smooth finish that is perfect to use anywhere that the wood is visible.

Treated Timber

Treated timber is timber that which has been appropriately treated with preservative chemicals with the intent of prolonging its intended lifecycle.

The quality of timber can deteriorate from the effect of water, fungal decay, and the activity of insects, such as beetles and termites.

C16 Timber

C16 is the most commonly used form of timber, utilised for different applications courtesy of its cost-effective nature.

C16 timber is kiln dried, to minimise the amount of moisture.

C24 Timber

C24 timber is another form of timber that is kiln-dried to minimise moisture content and is also widely used in UK construction projects, although it is less common than C16 timber.

C24 timber is roughly 50% stronger than C16 timber, so is better suited to longer spans or heavier loads, so a C16 timber joist will not be able to bear the same load weight as a C24 timber joist.
