Ceiling Plasterboard
Plaster boarding is a similar process whether you are doing it on a stud partition wall, an external wall or on a ceiling.
What is Ceiling Plasterboard?
Plaster boarding is a similar process whether you are doing it on a stud partition wall, an external wall or on a ceiling. For a standard wall, you should purchase plasterboard with a thickness of 12mm and for a ceiling, the preferable thickness of drywall is around 12.5mm.
People assume that when ceiling plasterboard you must use thicker plaster, but that is actually not true. Thicker plasterboard will stick harder to the ceiling and will be difficult to seal joints if needed.
For ceiling plasterboard, you are looking around £400 to £500 for a small ceiling, with the price rising to £550 to £700 for a medium ceiling, or £800 to £1,000 for a large ceiling.
When it comes to plastering a ceiling, the Mick George Group have you covered. We have a huge range of plasterboard options to choose from dependant on the size and scale of your project.
How To Plasterboard a New Ceiling
Plaster boarding a new ceiling is much easier with two people, one to support the plasterboard and one to screw into place, but it can be done by one person with the help of some lengths of wood.
After the timber for the ceiling structure is installed plaster boarding can be installed by using the following simple steps:
- Cutting the boards – Cutting the boards is easily done with a Stanley knife on new ceilings, but again larger ceiling spaces can benefit from the use of a more powerful hand tool – that can make it much faster and easier to cut.
- Fitting the boards – From the corner of the room start to gradually fill out and fix the boards onto the ceiling joists. New ceilings can make use of either plasterboard screws or nails to fix the boards in place.
- Finishing touches – Joint taping in a new ceiling is essential for a smooth surface so be sure to skim each area with a jointing compound to cover up all the fixings and any seams within the ceiling system – the surface is now ready to paint.
Most people tend not struggle when plaster boarding a new ceiling with a helper as the process is similar to that of a new partition wall – Although, with the effects of gravity making it quite tricky. However, this shouldn’t create much of an issue and you can theoretically install a plasterboard ceiling on your own.

You can paint straight onto/over plasterboard in most cases, you simply need to cover the joints and any holes created by your fixings first. Being able to paint directly onto the surface of the new wall is convenient and saves time and money. You can also plaster over painted plasterboard at a later stage.

It’s not necessary to stagger seams on ceiling drywall. However, because these joints are relatively difficult to finish – and tend to be noticeable in the finished product – it’s a good idea to stagger the drywall panels to make the joints less visible.

To determine the number of plasterboards required to cover your wall or ceiling you need to take the height and width of the boards and then multiply them together – before dividing this number by the square metres you want to fill.
