What are Wooden Sleepers?
Traditionally used to lay rail tracks on, Wooden Sleepers are large rectangular sawn pieces of timber that are now used in a variety of landscaping and gardening environments, such as raised beds, lawn and border edging, steps, pathways and retaining walls.
All of our wooden sleepers are made from softwood for easier handling and are pressure treated to ensure your Wooden Sleepers are protected from rot, fungus and insect attack, prolonging the longevity of the Sleeper condition.
Where are Wooden Sleepers Used?
Wooden sleepers can be used in all manner of ways.
The most popular uses for wooden sleepers are retaining walls, border edging and raised beds, however, we have seen people make raised deck areas from them, use sleepers vertically to create fences and walls, and one customer even used wooden sleepers to make a swimming pool for the summer!
They can be secured and lined to make ponds, and many gardeners and landscapers use them to make benches, tables and other features in the garden. For a more modern touch, we’d recommend pairing our wooden sleepers with gabion baskets.
Wooden Sleepers are mainly used for retaining walls, garden steps, edging/borders etc to add that stunning and professional look to your garden that only sleepers can provide – this is our area of expertise.

Wooden sleepers are known to shrink over time, so securing them tight is very important.
The best thing to use are Wooden sleeper screws and brackets. These may need to be changed over a few years to keep them as secure as possible.

Wooden Sleepers are usually untreated or pressure treated.
Naturally, untreated wooden Sleepers may display signs of other material deposits on the surface.
On the other hand, treated wooden Sleepers are coated in environmentally friendly, non-Creosote based preservatives, such as ACQ or Tanalith E, which are safe to use and suitable for all garden landscaping projects, making them a wise choice for your garden.
The Mick George Group supply both untreated and treated wooden Sleepers.

Wooden sleepers will last for years, especially if treated. Generally, treated wooden Sleepers will last around 8 to 10.
Softwood that is left untreated will still last around 2 to 5 years, which is why all of our softwood wooden sleepers have been treated for longevity.
Oak and Hardwood wooden Sleepers will last between 15 to 20 years but are considerably more expensive.
