Role Purpose
We are looking for someone who leads by example — a visible, approachable professional who can positively influence behaviours on site and drive a strong safety culture through engagement, coaching, and mentoring to support continuous improvement in SHE standards across, quarry, concrete and waste management environments
You will provide visible felt leadership across operational sites, engaging directly with front-line staff acting as a coach and mentor and supporting teams to improve safety performance and ownership, and build and maintain credible, trust-based relationships with both operational and management teams, offering practical, experience-led H&S guidance aligned to real-world site activities
Responsibilities:
- To carry out site visits with senior and operational management to promote and advance the business line’s SHE strategies and promote best practice
- To support operational and senior management to ensure all SHE related accidents, dangerous occurrences, significant near-hits, incidents and cases of occupational ill health are fully investigated using root cause analysis techniques, and advise on the necessary measures to avoid a similar occurrence; as appropriate
- To liaise with the business line Directors to schedule, support and attend Panel of Learning meetings following significant workplace incidents
- To advise and support senior management, to ensure regulatory compliance and improved SHE performance at all Heidelberg Materials Recycling sites. Work with senior and operational managers to ensure a consistent approach to SHE management across all company operations.
- To attend business line management meetings to promote and advance the adopted SHE strategies.
- To support the management and identify further development needs of the company IMS and associated database systems that support it, and in conjunction with operations management and the SHE team, review the effectiveness of the IMS system procedures on a regular basis
- To monitor and report on SHE performance at business line meetings across the area under your responsibility. To monitor and promote follow up action from internal/external audits, statutory inspection reports and incidents.
- To develop SHE related safety alerts and other SHE communications as identified or requested.
- To advise the business on compliance requirements for SHE requirements outlined in the IMS. Support industry bodies and working groups, as directed by line-management.
- To attend and advise the safety, health or environmental committees in your area of responsibility or as advised by line-management.
- To establish and manage working groups to review current IMS procedures ensuring their development and delivery to maximise effectiveness and reduce costs.
- To deputise for the Materials Recycling SHE Business Partner at business line operations meetings including those chaired by the business line Director.
- To liaise with senior managers, projects managers, Company engineers, managers and contractors regarding the performance of new and existing plant and equipment, to ensure compliance with legal and company standards. Where appropriate, to act as the primary point of contact for the local or national health, safety or environment regulatory and enforcement bodies.
- To support the embedding of sustainable behaviour and practice on operational sites
- Complete any AD-Hoc requests from Manager.
Skills & Qualifications Required
- At least 3 years’ experience in a Health, Safety and Environment role or an Operational Management role in ready mix concrete, quarrying or waste management
- NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety
- Strong working knowledge of H&S practices relevant to site-based operations
- Proven operational experience within, quarrying, ready-mix concrete or waste management industries bringing credibility through experience, not just qualification
- Experience with ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 management systems.
- Competent in Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams and PowerPoint).
- Experience preparing risk assessments and other compliance documents.
- Experience conducting audits, inspections, and accident investigations.
- Able to balance practicality with compliance, ensuring safety is both effective and workable
- A natural communicator who can influence at all levels of the organisation
