Acoustic Insulation
Acoustic insulation is a type of soundproofing that attempts to prevent sound from entering or exiting an enclosed space by forming a barrier between the interior and the exterior area.
What is Acoustic Insulation?
Acoustic insulation is a type of soundproofing that attempts to prevent sound from entering or exiting an enclosed space through the formation of a barrier between the interior and the exterior area.
There are two types of acoustic insulation used in buildings, airborne and impact.
Airborne – Airborne acoustic insulation is used to reduce sound which is pumped directly into an airborne space. When sound waves travel through the air and reach a building element they hit it and cause it to vibrate. These vibrations travel through the structure or building and are radiated out the other side albeit at a reduced volume.
Impact – Â Impact acoustic insulation is used for floating floors and within office spaces. Impact sound occurs because the impact causes both sides of the building element to vibrate, generating sound waves. This can often be the hardest to isolate as impact vibrations are stronger and travel further through dense materials.
Acoustic insulation has been specially designed to absorb sound waves and reduce the transfer of noise. It is thicker and more dense than regular thermal insulation, making it an excellent choice for soundproofing your home.
The Mick George Group have an excellent range of different acoustic insulation materials which our suitable for any size construction projects.
Acoustic Insulation Benefits
Acoustic insulation absorbs sound waves, preventing them from passing through to the next room, to a smaller or greater extent.
Because Acoustic insulation absorbs sound waves, it is also used as a solution to reduce the amount of reverb (echo) experienced in a confined space such as an office, library or even café.
Installing acoustic insulation will make a positive impact anywhere. Whether that be in a library to help reduce the sound or installing in your lounge to give you that bit more privacy, acoustic insulation comes with a vast majority of different benefits:
- Improving other sounds – By deadening unwanted sound using absorption panels, you can make other sounds much clearer. This leads to improved intelligibility of speech in lecture rooms or performance venues.
- Home value – Acoustic insulation is an attractive quality for a home or property to possess. It is a selling point that can easily be emphasised when putting a property up for sale since it generates additional interest for the buyer.
- Privacy – Perhaps the biggest advantage of acoustic insulation is the privacy factor. Whether the house has many people living in it, or whether you just want to block out the noise coming from a busy road outside, acoustic insulation is the way to go. Acoustic insulation is also a great option if you are building a home theatre.
- Improved Productivity – In offices, a space without excess noise can make for greater productivity. It can be easier for staff to hear customers on the phone and make conference rooms places that can be used without worries about confidential information leaking out.
- Sleep – Without doubt, you’ll be able to sleep more soundly if your home is a quieter place.
Using an acoustic insulator can effectively absorb sound and when used with other soundproofing solutions, can help to bring floors and walls into compliance in meeting (and when used as part of a build-up) exceed Part E Building Regulations.
Order Acoustic Insulation
It is a good idea to include acoustic insulation in the internal walls around noisy rooms such as laundries, bathrooms, home theatres and playrooms, but also include them around rooms that you want to create quiet zones such as the study or bedrooms.

To answer your specific question, acoustic mineral wool insulation is denser than thermal insulation (it usually has a minimum density of 10kg/m3), and as a result is less effective thermally.

Thermal insulation restricts heat transfer, whereas acoustic insulation restricts sound transfer or sound reverberation. The combined product is thermal acoustic insulation, which is effective in both reducing heat and noise transfer.
