Bioenergy – Second Most Important Renewable

An annual report has found that bioenergy was second only to wind, which produced 28.7% of the UK’s energy in 2023

Bioenergy Importance Increases

An annual review has highlighted that bioenergy is now officially the second biggest contributor to renewable power generation, having made up 11% of the total renewable energy output in 2023.

Renewable Energy Sources

Bioenergy includes energy from waste, biomass power and anaerobic digestion. As the UK strives to reach renewable targets, energy from waste (efw) alone has grown significantly, increasing by 42% in the past five years.

From the annual report, bioenergy was second only to wind, which produced 28.7% of the UK’s energy in 2023. As the UK pushes on to meet net zero targets, the current outlook paints a positive picture with over 15.5% of the UK’s overall power coming from renewable sources currently.
