Asbestos Paint

Before Asbestos was banned in construction, it was used in a variety of different paints and other building materials. If you are in a building that was built before Asbestos was banned, it is likely that any paint on the property will contain Asbestos.

Up until 1980, Asbestos was inserted into spray paint which was then applied to form textured and popcorn ceilings. Asbestos paint was extremely popular in construction because of the following attributes:

  • Asbestos was a naturally-occurring material meaning availability was high and cost-effective.
  • Asbestos was stable and gave increased strength to paint products improving their holding power.
  • Asbestos was a lightweight, fireproof and an excellent insulator.

Asbestos is only dangerous when it’s in a raw fibre form or as a dried additive to the paint. Once the asbestos paint is applied and dried, it is relatively stable and safe. However if disturbed, dried Asbestos paint will release tiny microscopic fibres. Asbestos fibres are extraordinarily light and frequently go airborne and this is when it becomes dangerous.

Fortunately Asbestos in paint is no longer produced for this reason but there may still be Asbestos based paints on your property. We recommend if in doubt to contact an Asbestos removal expert such as Mick George who can provide a survey and removal if necessary.
