Asbestos in Walls

Asbestos was often mixed with cement, sand and plaster to provide a durable and thermally insulating material used to construct walls in both residential homes and commercial properties. Asbestos in walls was very popular in the building industry and can still be found in many homes built between 1930 and 1980. Asbestos can be found in Concrete, plaster and drywall in properties built during these decades, and both interior and exterior walls could contain traces of Asbestos.

It can be difficult to tell whether or not the walls in your property contain Asbestos. Most asbestos walls are generally considered non-friable, which means that the material cannot be crushed by hand to form a powder. Bonded Asbestos walls where the fibres are mixed into the cement are considered to be relatively safe and stable as the small fibres cannot be crushed and released. However, if the walls have begun to deteriorate or renovation work is planned that could disturb the fibres, then the Asbestos becomes potentially dangerous.

Construction work and the use of power tools can release fine Asbestos particles into the air which are very harmful if inhaled. If you suspect the presence of Asbestos walls in your home, the safest course of action is to contact a professional service. If your walls are in good condition then no action may be needed, but if the Asbestos needs removing then removal must always be carried out by trained individuals.

The Mick George Group are fully licensed to carry out every step of the Asbestos management process. We will survey your property and create a report to fully document the presence and extent of Asbestos walling, and we will then advise on how to proceed.
