Asbestos Artex Removal

Artex is a material often found on ceilings and walls used to create a textured effect. Textured coating ceilings or “popcorn ceilings” were very popular and prevalent in the 60s, 70s and 80s, and the spray-on coating to create this effect often contained Asbestos. Asbestos was used as a component in Artex and other similar branded products as it had a reinforcing effect. Although Asbestos-free Artex became available in the 70s, many properties with texturing ceilings made prior to this do still contain traces of Asbestos.

There is no way to tell if your Artex ceiling contains Asbestos just by looking at it. If you suspect that there may be Asbestos in Artex on the ceilings of your property, it is safest to call in a trained professional to survey the ceiling for Asbestos. Provided that the Artex is left alone, the Asbestos does not pose a health risk as it is not being disturbed. However, if the Artex was to be broken or sanded, this releases dangerous Asbestos particles into the air that can cause harm when inhaled.

If you are planning renovation or building work that could disturb Artex ceiling Asbestos, The Mick George Group are proud to be fully licensed in all aspects of Asbestos management. From assessment and site surveys through to removal and safe disposal, we can provide safe and efficient Artex removal.

We can identify the presence and extent of Asbestos in Artex in your ceilings and will advise on the safest way to proceed. This could be removing the Artex entirely, or applying a layer of plaster to coat the Artex. If the Artex ceiling is safely intact, no action may be needed. However, if the fibres are broken or you are planning building and renovation work, the Asbestos will need to be safely handled and removed.
