Structural Timber
Structural timber is timber used or intended for use in a loadbearing capacity in buildings where the strength of the timber is the primary consideration.
What is Structural Timber?
Structural timber is timber used or intended for use in a loadbearing capacity in buildings where the strength of the timber is the primary consideration.
There are 12 strength grades as set by the British Standard in the BS 5268, but the most commonly specified are C16 and C24. Both grades are used in structural applications and are suited to different loads.
The ‘C’ grading stands for conifer, the type of softwood tree from which the structural timber is derived.
Softwood is commonly used for timber structures as it is readily available, easily worked, of relatively low cost and its fast rate of growth gives a continuous supply from regenerated forest areas.
Where is Structural Timber Used?
Structural Hardwood Timbers are predominantly used for bearers, joists and load bearing sections in building and general construction. Kiln Dried Hardwood timber is structurally graded to ensure it is strong and dimensionally stable.
Today, a wide range of engineered structural timber solutions are commonly used in the UK and elsewhere, each one with its benefits and most appropriate applications.
The insulation qualities associated with Timber helps structural buildings to maintain a more constant temperature, especially when compared to materials like masonry, concrete, or steel. Structural timber will help reduce heating and associated energy requirements.
Order Structural Timber TodayC24 timber is the superior cousin of C16. This grade is also kiln dried and used in construction products.
It is more superior in terms of its properties such as strength, resilience and appearance with very few defects if any. C24 timber costs slightly more than C16.
Order Structural TimberTreated timber is suitable to be used externally and is suitable for wet areas or areas where the timber will be coming into contact with the ground.
Order Structural TimberTimber structures are usually characterised by a combination of different components, which together will deliver the best possible load-bearing capacity, thermal, moisture insulation, fire resistance, and long service life.
Order Structural TimberTimber is a great insulating material, helping to maintain a more constant temperature.
Compared to materials like masonry, concrete, or steel, timber will help reduce heating and associated energy requirements.
For example, a 2.5cm board has a better resistance to the loss of heat than a 11.4cm brick wall.
Order Structural TimberThe best way to protect and preserve wood, including timbers that have been tantalised or pressure-treated is to use a wood preservative.
Treating your wooden products should be treated as a priority, and depending on your local conditions and wood type this may need to be done from once every 3 months, to once every 12 months.
