Asbestos Roofs
Asbestos roof tiles may contain Asbestos Cement, which is a mixture of Cement and Asbestos. Asbestos can be found located inside the form of panels, gutters, insulation, shingles, downpipes, asphalt or the entire roof itself, within Asbestos roof felt.
Due to it’s successful thermal attributes and being fire retardant, it isn’t surprising that Asbestos was used in roofing and insulation in the 20th century. Builders commonly used Asbestos roofing felt as a floor backing and roofing material during these times.
How long does this kind of Asbestos roofing last?
This will depend on the quality and thickness of the asbestos roof material. Thinner roof sheeting will usually last around 50 to 60 years. Thicker roof sheeting measuring about a quarter of an inch thick will typically last 70 to 85 years.
Is an Asbestos Roof safe?
In most cases Asbestos roof tiles pose no health hazard in isolation. The dangerous fibres of the substance are kept firmly in place by the cement. However, Asbestos roof tiles and Asbestos roof felt can potentially become dangerous when they begin to deteriorate, thereby exposing the Asbestos fibres. Similarly any operation that causes abrasion of the tiles and felt is potentially hazardous for the same reason.
All type of Asbestos should be treated with extreme caution and it is important that you ensure you are following the correct protocol when completing Asbestos roof replacement and removing Asbestos roofing sheets.
