What is the best time of year to lay Turf?
One of the questions we are frequently asked is what is the best season to lay turf? Well, as long as the soil is not frozen stiff, waterlogged from too much rain or parched and extremely dry, turf can be laid at any time of the year! However, the biggest factor that affects the growth of new turf is surprisingly not the time of the year, but is actually how well the area is prepared for your new turf.
Having said that, the optimum season to lay turf with regards to weather is usually Spring or Autumn. At this time of year the soil is at the perfect soft texture that makes digging easier. On top of this, there is usually the right balance of sun and rain to help the turf grow healthily.
Laying Turf in Spring
If you’re looking to lay turf in Spring, we would recommend checking the soil before you lay your turf. If it has not recently rained, you should water the soil before starting to ensure good growth. As the weather in the Spring months can be temperamental, you will need to ensure that the turf does not dry out during the initial growth.
One thing that is important is to avoid mowing the new turf you have just laid during the first month of growth to allow the roots to settle into the soil.
Laying Turf in Summer
Although generally the summer months do not present the most ideal of the year to lay turf, it is still possible to do so. Even more so than in the Spring months, it is very important that the soil is well watered before the new lawn has been put down in order to make sure there is lots of moisture to help the grass grow smoothly.
During the summer, laying turf requires a great amount of care due to the heat. It is very important that while the turf settles into the soil, you should avoid walking on and using the grass. If you have children, pets or hopes of a garden party over the summer, we would recommend limiting access to the new lawn until autumn when it has fully grown into the soil.
Laying Turf In Autumn
Autumn is often known as the best time of the year to lay turf, especially between September to October. The reason is to take advantage of the perfect balance of heat and rain in these months. Depending on the weather in November, you can even still lay turf in this month, as long as the frost has not settled in yet.
Laying your turf in Autumn is also beneficial as the lawn will have had a solid six months to settle in and grow strong and healthily before the next summer comes around.
Laying Turf In Winter
Winter is the same as Summer in that it is not the ideal season to lay turf, but is still possible. If you do lay turf during these seasons, due to the extreme weather conditions leaning one way or the other, the growth can be held back. This can be especially true if not properly and consistently maintained.
We would suggest waiting to lay your new turf once the winter frost has passed in March/April, giving the lawn more than enough time to establish, ready for summer.
