Laying turf will allow you to enjoy an instant lawn without the delay of waiting for your seeds to grow. With our premium quality lawn turf, you can rest assured that providing the correct steps for installation and maintenance are followed, you will have a lush green to enjoy throughout the seasons to come.

Preparing to Lay Turf

To give your turf the best chance from the initial stages of laying, the preparation of the ground will be crucial and here’s how to achieve the best starting point possible:

  • Remove the existing turf by using a spade to slice beneath it
  • Using a spade again, turn the soil over to a depth of roughly 15cm
  • Anything that does not belong on the ground should now be removed, including stones, weeds and any other materials that may cause an obstruction

Raking Turf

Ensure that before you begin the raking process, the ground is level. If you need to purchase the right tools for the job including a spade and a rake, you can do so here.

  • Rake over the entire area to ensure it is completely level
  • The ground needs to be firm and to achieve this, tread on the surface to highlight any areas which may be too soft
  • Rake any areas which are soft and continue this process until the whole area is firm

How to Lay Turf

  • Begin by unrolling one strip of turf around the perimeter of what will become your new lawn taking care to make sure that the entire underneath is in full contact with the soil
  • Lay your next roll of turf along the longest straight run and continue this process until the area has been covered
  • Join the adjoining ends together without stretching/ forcing the turf
  • Once the area has been covered, cut away any sections that overlap with a sharp knife

Watering Your Turf

Watering your new turf is highly important and the amount needed will depend on the weather conditions (more water is needed in hotter conditions)

  • Water the turf immediately after laying and do not stop the process until the water has been absorbed into the soil, giving the turf the best chance of growing into a healthy lawn
  • Continue to water the turf each evening for the next 2 – 3 weeks dependant on weather conditions

Lawn Feed

  • Keeping your turf well fed will drastically improve its chances of growing to the best possible standard
  • Use a well balanced fertiliser for the first 4 – 6 weeks after laying
