RDF levels rose by more than 6% in 2023 with more than 1.53 million tonnes being exported.
RDF Exports in 2023
A recent report indicates that Refuse derived fuel (RDF) exports from England rose by 6.3% in 2023.
Recent years have seen levels continue to decline, so this is very positive news from the industry after more than 1.53 million tonnes were exported from England during 2023.
RDF Export Locations
The most significant rise in RDF exports were to Germany, with an increase of 59% year on year which equated to 176,970 tonnes as Germany looked for alternatives to gas.
The largest destination for RDF exports from England in terms of volume was Sweden which made up 55% of the total RDF exports for the year.
RDF Export Implications
Although the 6% rise represents a positive improvement for the industry, the figure could have been considerably higher had it not been for a 31 Euro per tonne charge introduced in 2019 for the Netherlands which continues to have a negative impact on export levels.
Exporters are now optimistic that the positive sector growth can continue throughout 2024 as more countries consider alternative fuel sources.
