In the current UK climate, it's important for your garage to be insulated so you can use it all year round. This simple step-by-step guide will help you insulate your garage.
How to insulate your Garage
In the current UK climate, it’s important for your garage to be insulated so you can use it all year round. Luckily, the Mick George Group have provided you with this easy step-by-step guide on how to insulate your garage.
Firstly, there’s a few bits you might want to consider before attempting to insulate your garage.
Location – The insulation needed for your garage will be dependent on the area of installation, such as your door, ceiling, or floor. The decision might be dictated by the structure of your garage, garages which consist of plasterboard walls will need different insulation to those which have brick walls.
Type of use – People do all sorts of things to their garages, from having it as a games room, home gym, home cinema, storage room and much more. Whichever option you decide, will ultimately be a factor on the amount and type of insulation that you require.
Material costs – The more insulation your garage requires, the more you will spend on material costs – so size is the main factor.
Garage door Insulation
One of the most important parts of insulating a garage is the garage door, the garage door is the worst part of the garage structure in terms of heat loss so it’s important you start with this. It’s important you consider these following tips when doing the garage door:
- Insulation kits – An insulation kit will make it much easier for casual DIYs to insulate their garage cheaply and efficiently. They are easy to use, with multi-layered foil-faced sheets and sticky backs that you apply to the door.
- Foam board – You can use sheets of foam insulation similarly to how you would insulate any other ordinary wall. Foam boards tend to be more difficult to cut and apply to a door, so this method will be a lot more time-consuming.
Once you have fitted the door with sufficient insulation, you will be ready to commence with the rest of the garage.
Garage Floor Insulation
Garage floors are often extremely cold during the winter period, so installing a layer of insulation can make it a more desirable place to spend time in this winter. Particularly if you’re looking to convert the garage into useable living space, it’s a good idea to use rigid insulation board to insulate the floor.
Insulating a garage floor will also improve the look of your floor as you can decorate right over the top with underlay and carpet or a timber deck. Floors tend to be tricky when insulating, but it makes a crucial factor in making the garage comfortable for a living space.

Garage wall Insulation
Installing insulation inside your garage wall important as when you are converting a garage to be a more habitable room you need to make sure that the walls are properly insulated so you create a room which stays warm when it is needed.
We recommend using our insulated plasterboard when you have cold creeping in from walls, the celotex insulated plasterboard will be the most useful one for this project. It’s vital to remember these couple points when insulating your garage wall:
- Pitched roof – If you own a pitched roof, radiant barriers will successfully insulate from high heat.
- Flat roof – A flat roof will be more prone to the effects of any rain since there is no run-off from gravity.
Metal Garage Insulation
Fiberglass is the most popular insulation solution for metal building systems because it provides the lowest installed cost per R-value. With various facing solutions, the fiberglass insulation will result in a durable and attractive finish whilst giving speedy construction times.
Brick Garage Insulation
As with a metal garage, we recommend using Fibreglass insulation.
The Mick George Group have an excellent range of durable & high-quality thermal insulated plasterboard, the perfect solution to reduce heat loss from your garage.
