The Current Hazardous Waste Wood Regulations
The regulation position statement (RPS250) relating to hazardous wood waste from the demolition and construction industry is a regulation that allows hazardous amber waste wood items to be classified and processed as non-hazardous until further testing has been completed.
RPS250 – What’s Changing?
From September 1st 2023 the RPS250 regulation is set to be removed which will have an impact on construction and demolition companies, as well as their customer base.
The change in procedures will mean that waste wood which has come from any building that was built before 2007 will no longer be accepted at wood recycling sites unless tested.
In contrast to the current regulations where the potentially hazardous wood is deemed as non-hazardous before testing, the waste wood will effectively be deemed to be hazardous unless it is sent away for testing prior to its arrival at the wood recycling site.
Wood Waste Impact on Customers
Wood waste recycling customers will need to be aware of these changes as they will significantly limit the amount of wood they will be permitted to recycle, if the materials have come from pre-2007 buildings. The ten potentially hazardous items are:
