Self Levelling Concrete Explained
Self-levelling concrete has polymer-modified cement with high flow characteristics, which don’t require the addition of large volumes of water for placement on site. Self-levelling Concrete is typically used to create a flat, level and smooth surface with a high compressive strength similar to or higher than more traditional Concrete mixes, prior to installing any interior floor coverings such as carpets, tiles and timber.
When self-levelling Concrete is poured on site, a gauge rake is used to move it into place without spreading it too thinly, before finishing using a smoothing tool. The polymers in the self-levelling mix keep the viscosity of the product so it remains uniform in composition from top to bottom without the sand aggregates sinking to the bottom of the installed layer, ensuring strength throughout the full layer of Concrete.
What Causes Uneven Concrete Floors?
Floors can become uneven over time due to a number of different reasons, but mostly as a result of cracking and moisture. So, whether you want to refinish an uneven floor yourself or completely replace your existing floor, you’ll most likely need to level the concrete floor beforehand.
When to Use Levelling Compound
Many people choose to level their Concrete floors themselves. However, using self-levelling compound on a Concrete floor is reliant on how much of the floor isn’t level. To accurately measure just how unlevel your floor is, we recommend using a long spirit level. If the concrete floor is less than 5mm out of level, you can use a self-levelling flooring compound to even out the surface.
