Topography and Land Surveys
Land surveyors use traditional instruments and digital technology to produce surveys, data and topographical maps for use in construction projects to determine the Earth’s surface features.
Topography and Topographical Maps
Topography is the study of the land surface and specifically, the the underlying foundation of a landscape and is a vital planning tool used by Engineers within Construction projects.
Topography maps incorporate natural and artificial features, giving consideration to boundaries, cities, hydrography, parks, landmarks, transportation, and buildings.
Elevation is the distinguishing factor for topographic maps over many other similar surveying techniques, as it allows a two-dimensional terrain representation of the Earth’s three-dimensional design.

What is a Land Survey?
Land surveying is a process for determining distances and angles between points on land, to permit the ability to calculate accurate site plans.
The Mick George Group use technology such as robotic total stations and theodolites to precisely map an area. The collected data can then be manipulated by computer aided design (CAD), building information modelling (BIM) or geographic information systems (GIS) software to produce detailed and technical reports.
Land Survey Types
Land surveys can be divided into three basic categories:
- Standard land surveys: Describing boundary lines & calculating land areas
- Engineering surveys: Ensuring a building is constructed in the correct place
- Informational surveys: Used to create maps and charts
Why use a Land Survey?
- Assessing site suitability for construction.
- Geospatial measurement: charting exact coordinates of site features.
- Setting out: Establishing building lines and road alignments on site.
- Photogrammetry: producing digital images of sites.
- Remote sensing: mapping land use with satellite photography.
- Geomatics: gathering data and using GIS to analyse and interpret site features.
- Geomechanics: monitoring land movement and subsidence.
- Drafting 2D and 3D topographical charts and maps.
The Mick George Group provide a number of land surveys and topography maps as part of any wider Site Enabling package, so get in touch with our experts to find out more.
