Asbestos Pipe Lagging

One of the trickiest areas where Asbestos was heavily implemented was piping and insulation. Piping is one of the elements of households which the majority of us pay little attention to. After all, as long as there are no leaks or sink blocks, why would anyone need to ensure if everything works fine? The cases of Asbestos on pipes is even less known which may put people at risk or Asbestos fibre inhalation.

Why was Asbestos Pipe Insulation and Lagging used?

Asbestos was often called a ‘magic material’ by many in the construction trade and subsequently used in high quantities. Of course, this was before the health risks were discovered. Asbestos can be a highly effective insulation material, this is why it was used on pipes and similar utilities, keeping them dry and in good condition for longer periods of time. It was also affordable and easy to use.

What does Asbestos Pipe Insulation and Lagging look like?

Asbestos Pipe Lagging has various different appearances, but is predominantly a fibrous material which flakes and powders easily. When applied to pipes, it is often engulfed in protective coating which can be a variety of colours so it can be hard to spot without expert knowledge.

Is Asbestos Pipe Lagging dangerous?

Often hidden away, Asbestos pipe lagging can be difficult to recognise and subsequently, one of the most dangerous Asbestos Containing Materials, if inadvertently disturbed. Consequently, we’d discourage unassisted examinations which could lead to toxic Asbestos fibres being released.
