Asbestos Insulation

Asbestos contained in insulation was one of the biggest sources of Asbestos exposure at the height of Asbestos use. It was considered an ideal material for thermal insulation in homes and commercial properties, due to the fibrous nature of the product slowing down heat transfer very effectively.

Unfortunately, this also made it one of the most dangerous forms of Asbestos as the fibres were easily and frequently released, harming those exposed to it. Vermiculite insulation was also a popular insulating material that was found to be contaminated within Asbestos and harmful to health.

What is Vermiculite insulation?

Similar to Mica, Vermiculite is a flaky natural material which expands when it is heated. It is used for many purposes including: in fire retardants, as a fertiliser, in potting soil, and in home insulation.

The concerns about the dangers with Vermiculite insulation in the UK stem from the fact that until the 1990s, most vermiculite originated from a mine in America which also contained Asbestos deposits.

The utmost care must be taken with insulation that is suspected to contain asbestos, as a slight disturbance can release harmful fibres and particles into the air.

There are many types of insulation Asbestos or vermiculite insulation, including loose-fill, insulation wrappings for pipes and plumbing, Asbestos insulating board, spray-on insulation and more. It is most likely to be found in confined spaces such as roof spaces and attics.
