Asbestos Guttering
Asbestos was a popular building product up until the 1980s, meaning that houses built during that period may include Asbestos guttering.
On roofs, Asbestos cement can be found on a frequent basis in the form of gutter linings. Asbestos cement products, including downpipes and guttering, are manufactured using mechanized processes in which Asbestos fibres are mixed with cement slurry. Asbestos is usually about 10-40% of the total product, forming a more durable material. It is often used within corrugated roofing, sheds, garages, drainpipe, flues, water tanks, gutters, and other similar products.
If the guttering on your property has never been replaced or the sliding on your house is original, there is a strong possibility that your materials contain Asbestos and should be removed at the earliest convenience.
Can you identify Asbestos in guttering?
Unfortunately, it is not always possible to tell from observation whether Asbestos is present in your guttering. If you are concerned about guttering but aren’t sure what the material is made from, it is necessary to have an Asbestos survey carried out to establish the presence of the material.
Is Asbestos in guttering dangerous?
As with all forms of Asbestos, Asbestos guttering can only be dangerous if it is in a poor condition or is at a risk of being disturbed but we would still advise that Asbestos guttering is upgraded at the earliest opportunity to prevent any later problems.
