Asbestos Artex Removal

Artex is a material often found on ceilings and walls used to create a textured effect. Textured coated ceilings or “popcorn ceilings” were very popular in the 60s, 70s and 80s, however the spray-on coating often contained Asbestos due to its reinforcing qualities. Although Asbestos-free Artex became available in the 70s, many properties with textured ceilings made prior to this, do still contain traces of Asbestos.

How can I tell if I have Asbestos in my Artex ceiling?

There is no way to tell if your Artex ceiling contains Asbestos just by looking at it. If you suspect that there may be Asbestos Artex within your property, it is advisable to call in a trained professional to complete an Asbestos survey.

Is Asbestos in Artex dangerous?

Provided that the Artex is left undisturbed, the Asbestos does not pose a health risk. However, if the Artex was to be broken or sanded, this could release dangerous Asbestos particles into the air that can cause harm when inhaled.

If you are planning renovation or building work that could disturb Asbestos Artex, the Mick George Group are fully licensed in all aspects of Asbestos management.

We can identify the presence and extent of  Artex Asbestos and will advise on the safest way to proceed. This could be removing the Artex entirely, or applying a layer of plaster to coat the Artex. If the Artex ceiling is safely intact, no action may be needed.
