Asbestos Materials in Buildings
Asbestos was previously used in many common materials to construct buildings, with all buildings built before the year 2000 likely to contain some form of Asbestos.
If you are responsible for managing the maintenance and repair of a building, you must manage any Asbestos in it. As well as protecting people from exposure to Asbestos fibres, you have a legal duty to manage Asbestos in your building.
Why was Asbestos used in buildings?
Renowned for its insulating, heat resistant and strengthening properties, asbestos was commonly used within a range of different construction materials in the late 20th century, including roofing, sprayed and textured coatings, insulation materials, ceiling and wall panels, cladding, floor and roof tiles, textiles, soffits, water tanks, pipe lagging and gutters. Its versatility meant that it could be found in a range of locations within a building, from airing cupboards and fuse boxes to fireplaces and boilers.
Is Asbestos in buildings dangerous?
Due to the dangerous health risks associated with Asbestos in Building, if you suspect your building contains Asbestos, we’d strongly advise that you take action immediately and seek an approved contractor to help remove it before it causes human health related issues.
There may not be any immediate risk should the Asbestos building materials remain undisturbed, or are considered in good condition, but should circumstances change, the associated dangers will increase.
