The Brief

Mick George Ltd was associated with the Earthworks for the Upper Dean Street development on behalf of Clegg Construction Ltd.

A prime site in Birmingham’s Southside district has been secured for a major new student development, which will see a large, purpose-built student accommodation complex erected.

The location on the corner of Upper Dean Street and Pershore Street, located close to the popular Bullring Shopping Centre and Wholesale Markets has been granted full planning consent for a mixed-use student bedroom and communal facilities, as well as ground floor retail units.

The site is currently in use as a car park and will house a ten-storey building which retains the façade of the Grade II-listed 42-45 Upper Dean Street to create a new entrance to the accommodation.

The project is an exciting part of the regeneration jigsaw that is currently being compiled in the proposed Birmingham Smithfield Masterplan, and is certain to be a welcome addition to the city’s residential and retail offering.

It is envisaged that the accommodation is likely to be a very attractive proposition to students looking to be at the heart of this vibrant district, including those incoming from international shores, further increasing the strength of the local economy.
