The Future of Concrete
An international research programme is underway to establish a permeable road surface made with seashells as a low carbon, poured-in-place concrete pavement with improved drainage properties.
The initiative which began three years back, is a joint venture being investigated by several recognised education and sector experts.
Thus far, the leaders have ascertained that adding shellfish waste can successfully substitute other aggregates to reduce and preserve non-renewable components, whilst simultaneously recycling said materials for environmental benefit.
Initial finding will be shared shortly, with further developments and results being revealed at a series of periodically planned events across the year, allowing for different seasonal properties to be tested.
