Stanwick Lakes is a unique 750 acre countryside attraction and nature reserve located in the heart of Northamptonshire Nene Valley, that is home to extensive and imaginative play areas, rare wildlife, open spaces and paths that families, walkers, cyclists and nature lovers explore at leisure.
Managed as a social enterprise, by the Rockingham Forest Trust, an environmental charity and rural development trust, the group recently managed to secure funding to a value of £35,000 from local business, Mick George Ltd, intended to meet their core objective of bringing people closer to the environment, creating green spaces for communities to enjoy.
For the 200,000 visitors annually, who enter the amenity, all are greeted with an impressive, entirely bespoke, adventure playground that rises dramatically out of its landscape, while subtlety blending in with the surroundings. Immediately visible on entrance to the site, the facility is without doubt the most utilised within the grounds’.
However, its popularity over the years has come at a cost, with the iconic water tower’ focal point showing sever signs of wear-and-tare. The grant will be utilised to revitalise the attraction, commissioning a new, and unique ‘gateway’ section for the tower, which will provide stimulation, educational and enjoyment benefits, through participation in a healthy outdoor activity. Not to mention the genuine aesthetic improvements provided to the park’ as a whole.
The development arose following a consultation which saw in excess of 150 people sign a survey displayed in the visitor centre, showing support for the project, as well as over 600 children who attended ‘holiday club’, and each ranked their experience at the destination.
Alyson Allfree, Director at Rockingham Forest Trust said: ‘‘we are delighted that we have been able to upgrade a much-loved part of our central play area at Stanwick lakes. The previous piece of equipment had come to the end of its life, so this new addition to the big climbing tower will ensure that children will be having adventurous fun for many years to come, thanks to Mick George Ltd’s generous donation.”
Jon Stump, Finance Director at Mick George Ltd commented: ‘’As a business, we’re always keen to support amenities that are adjacent to our operating sites, as a gesture of our gratitude for their on-going support. Stanwick Lakes is just down the road from our Ringstead establishment, and is an extremely popular location for the local community, of all age groups, so we were particularly keen to get involved.’’
